Senior Director, WSJ Marketing & Subscription Strategy

The Marketing and Subscriptions Strategy team is responsible for growing the subscriber base of Dow Jones products globally, across WSJ, Barron's, MarketWatch and Investor's Business Daily. This team sits within the Marketing department and sets strategic plans and priorities for each of the lines of business. You will work specifically on The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and reports directly to the VP of Marketing & Subscription Strategy, WSJ.

Role Overview:

Our Sr. Director of WSJ Marketing & Subscription Strategy is responsible for growing WSJ's paid subscriber base and revenue, working cross-functionally with various teams to help set, operationalize and achieve subscription growth. You will analyze data, insights and performance to inform and develop strategies that will grow the WSJ subscription business. On a day-to-day basis you will be working in a general management capacity utilizing your marketing expertise across the customer journey to work collaboratively with various teams on developing and executing programs/initiatives and ensuring all areas of the business are aligned and working toward the same strategic goals. These cross-functional teams include performance marketing, brand marketing, data science and analytics, audience development, customer insight, product, finance, legal, operations, customer service and editorial.

You Will:

  • Develop marketing programs with functional teams that deliver global subscription growth. Be the day-to-day strategic and executional partner and leader.

  • Understand and promote a customer-first mindset by using insights to drive growth. Be a champion for the customer across the company.

  • Work closely with data and insights to identify trends and opportunities that support business cases to accelerate subscriber and revenue growth, with a particular focus on global pricing strategy, international growth, print-to-digital transition and product offerings.

  • Lead regular meetings with marketing and cross-functional teams to ensure all are delivering on agreed plans that drive strategic goals. Manage tactical initiatives to ensure timely, on-budget execution.

  • Understand the competitive landscape to identify market opportunities and risks.

You Have:

  • 15+ years of experience in a global digital subscription business, specializing in marketing, pricing and product strategy, and physical-to-digital transformation; working in media or publishing sectors is a plus.

  • Expertise in acquisition, retention and engagement levers that drive revenue and subscription growth, with substantial hands-on experience in these areas too.

  • A highly effective strategic leader with the proven ability to rally cross functional teams toward common financial goals. Strong negotiation and influencing skills.

  • An entrepreneurial spirit - someone who can thrive in a fast-paced, start-up-like environment, works comfortably autonomously to drive results, and can proactively identify new opportunities to grow WSJ.

  • Superior analytical and cross-functional collaboration skills; excels at both hard and soft skills.

  • Effectively storytell with data to help craft strategies, build frameworks and business cases.

  • Strong financial acumen with P/L experience.

  • Demonstrated experience successfully leading the execution of complex projects.

  • Sees the "big picture" and impacts holistically and turns individual tactics into programs of work.

  • Ability to look ahead to understand how market trends will impact the business and pivot accordingly.
