Position Summary

The Firm's communications function, which comprises media relations, marketing communications and internal communications, is focused on protecting and building the Firm's reputation as an elite global law firm and employer of choice while supporting the Firm's business objectives by influencing perceptions of the Firm among key stakeholders.
The Media Relations Specialist supports the Firm's Americas media relations team in New York by focusing on the execution of an array of media relations strategies as well as managing many of the team's best practices and processes. This position will also be involved in content development, media analysis and other functions that support the team's media relations objectives.

Duties and Accountabilities1

  • Collaborate with the Americas media relations team in the development and implementation of media relations strategies and plans
  • Generate and pitch story ideas about the Firm's practices and areas of expertise
  • Craft and distill complex messages to draft press releases, pitches and backgrounders for media, as well as briefing notes for Firm partners
  • Create and maintain Firm media lists
  • Work with the Business Development teams across the Americas to assist in synchronizing media relations activity with marketing and business development goals
  • Manage media monitoring and track tangible earned media results to produce media relations activity reports, including creating the Firm's daily and weekly media coverage reports for dissemination across the Firm, and semi-annual reviews of the media relations team's work
  • Develop strong relationships with key reporters across key business, legal and other trade press
  • Place partner authored bylined articles in legal and trade publications and provide editorial guidance to Firm partners and associates as necessary
  • Liaise with the Firm's marketing communications team to identify upcoming thought leadership pieces that could be used to generate earned media results
  • Under the guidance of the Firm's media relations managers and the Associate Director, evaluate media opportunities for potential conflicts and work with the Firm's general counsel office to secure the appropriate clearances for media engagement
  • Manage additional, appropriate special projects
  • Assist in managing the media section of the Firm's website and intranet page

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience at a public relations/communications agency, law firm or other professional services company
  • Voracious consumption of news
  • Effective and persuasive oral and written communications skills, applicable to people at all levels of the Firm
  • Strong writing and editing skills, focusing on press releases, backgrounders, briefing notes and pitches
  • Ability to work independently and proactively, adaptive to changing and sometimes competing demands
  • Unrelenting attention to detail
  • Strong judgment, critical thinking, decisiveness
  • Deadline driven, and able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously to deliver quality work
  • Curiosity and an open mind for learning about issues and trends that are relevant to the Firm's business, practice areas and industries
  • Ability to use media relations databases, newswires and other data sources related to media relations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters and maintain confidentiality

Location and Reporting

  • This is a hybrid role based in our New York office.
  • This role reports to the Associate Director, Media Relations - Americas.
