Penguin Random House Production Design Assistant - in New York, New York

The Random House Children’s Books young adult covers team is seeking a highly motivated, skilled individual with a desire to learn and contribute to the team in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The Assistant Production Designer will assist the Art Director and the rest of the team in the execution of all phases of cover and jacket making. The position will expose the assistant to all phases of cover creation with an emphasis on cover and jacket layouts and digital pre-press preparation.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Uses Adobe Suite’s InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat programs to assist supervisor and team with design-related tasks including preparing sales materials, laying out covers and jackets, inputting text corrections, color correcting, creating spec plates, and all other pre-press preparation

• Prepares archive ready InDesign application files and press ready PDFs

• Tracks and meets routing schedules and printer deadlines

• Assists the team with administrative tasks including vendor setup, creating vendor agreements, and managing invoice payments

• Attends and participates in production, team, and title-specific meetings

Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:

• Strong knowledge of Adobe Suite’s current InDesign and Photoshop programs, and at least basic understanding of Adobe Suite’s Illustrator and Acrobat programs

• An affinity for and interest in the systems and the technical skills required for preparing materials for print production

• Highly organized, able to handle multiple tasks, to prioritize and manage time efficiently

• Strong attention to detail, quality and process

• Willingness to take on responsibilities and demonstrates an ability to ask for support or help

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a desire to learn and work collaboratively

• Portfolio showcasing layout design and technical skills

• Interest in book design

Preferred qualifications include:

• Knowledge of pre-press, 1-color and 4-color printing process, and PDF workflow.

• Experience with pre-press production at a publishing house

• Retouching and/or photo composite skills

• Deep interest in Young Adult books

The salary for this position is $48,000.All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
