Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) role is essential to the Motility Center, requiring an experienced NP to coordinate care among different providers. This position is responsible for coordinating the care of 30-40 patients per week, primarily outpatients. The NP performs direct patient care services, including evaluating and consulting on patients, following up pre- and post-motility and endoscopic procedures, reviewing and acting on results of blood chemistries and radiographic studies, discussing results with patients and referring physicians, and scheduling procedures and next steps as needed. Responsibilities also include performing motility studies (e.g., Sitz Marker Studies) and participating in GI motility collaborative research.

Coordination of patient care will involve outpatient clinics at the Medical Center campus and other off-site practice locations, as well as outpatient motility procedures. The NP will work closely with all members of our Motility team, including motility nurses, to assist with patient care issues. This position is essential to increasing the efficiency of the clinical service and vital to a well-functioning division. The NP activity significantly increases division revenue through increased throughput and overall increased GI attending productivity, manifested as increased motility procedural volume and referrals.

Responsibilities

• Attend clinic with GI motility attendings, covering patients referred for GI motility disorders (e.g., Achalasia, GERD, Gastroparesis), colorectal cancer screening, and general GI visits.
• Conduct preliminary consultations, including histories and physicals on all assigned patients, and present appropriate clinical information to attending staff.
• Independently see and evaluate outpatients requiring GI motility consultation.
• Order and follow up on diagnostic/laboratory tests and prescriptions.
• Provide patient education and communicate motility diagnostic plans with patients, families, and referring physicians.
• Coordinate care and provide pre-procedure education and medication counseling for patients undergoing motility testing (esophageal manometry, pH impedance, anorectal manometry) and direct-to-procedure pH testing (endoscopy with Bravo).
• Provide post-procedure follow-up care.
• Manage the GI motility schedule to ensure timely scheduling of procedures and follow-up appointments, and assist with coordinating motility procedures.
• Address patient questions and provide assistance with clinical matters.
• Work with insurers to obtain authorization for necessary tests and medications.
• Conduct Peer to Peer reviews for approval of insurance coverage.
• Administer Sitz Marker to patients, coordinate discontinuation of medications prior, and ensure proper timing of X-rays.
• Provide support and education for patients requiring feeding tubes.
• Actively participate in GI motility collaborative research and educational efforts, including consenting and educating patients.
• Contribute to case conferences.
• Perform additional related duties and responsibilities as needed/assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus one to two years of experience.
• Current New York State NP and RN licenses, and board certification.
• Current DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) certification.
• Familiarity with all aspects of gastroenterology and/or a background in GI surgery.
• Must be available to work a full week schedule, Monday-Friday.
• Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in gastroenterology or surgery.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish).

• Medical clearance conducted by the NYP Workforce Health & Safety Department
