The Net-Zero Manager, Operational Decarbonization is a new position that will sit on the American Express Corporate Sustainability Team and will play a critical role in driving the strategy, roadmap, and implementation of emissions reductions initiatives to meet the company’s net-zero and climate goals. The position will partner with key business units including real-estate, data centers, vehicle fleet, aviation, and others to develop and execute a net-zero transition plan. An ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience/expertise in operational sustainability initiatives including engineering, building science, net-zero data centers, vehicle fleet electrification, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), renewable energy, etc. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic, high-impact team that interacts with colleagues globally, touching nearly every aspect of the American Express business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guides company-wide climate and net-zero strategy to decarbonize American Express’ global operations through the implementation of renewable energy, vehicle fleet electrification, sustainable aviation fuels, and other solutions to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

  • Develops and oversees processes, tools and metrics to execute, measure and monitor progress on the Net-Zero strategy including conducting quantitative analysis of energy and emissions, synthesizing data, benchmarking, etc.

  • Coordinates planning, strategy development, internal goal-setting, and budgeting for operational net zero efforts.

  • Identifies challenges, risks, and opportunities to the Net-Zero program and works cross-functionally to address them with business unit partners.

  • Builds cross-functional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and develops presentations and materials for leadership.

  • Remains up to date on relevant industry standards and best practices to provide internal expertise on innovative approaches to scope 1 and 2 decarbonization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 4-6 years’ experience in a climate focused role particularly in engineering, building science, and/or with experience in operational sustainability related to real-estate, data centers, vehicle fleet electrification, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), renewable energy, and more

  • Bachelors’ degree (required) and Masters (preferred) in relevant fields including Engineering, Science, Sustainability Management, or related field

  • Familiarity with sustainability principles, building science, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and green building standards (e.g., LEED, BREEAM, WELL)

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and complex topics in a way that is tailored to various audiences

  • Practical experience with GHG emissions accounting

  • Strong project management experience, including the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously

  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, cross-functionally and globally in a deadline-oriented environment

  • Excellent technical, analytical, software, and presentation skills

  • An ability to quickly assess situations, identify gaps and recommend possible solutions

  • A critical thinker with attention to detail and the ability to work with a diverse set of stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience having set, validated, &/or managed Net-Zero targets for a business

  • Experience managing or working on Net-Zero programs, including operationalizing decarbonization activities

  • Expertise within ESG and Sustainability reporting frameworks and regulation (e.g., GHG Protocol, SBTi, TCFD, GRI, CSRD, etc.)

Qualifications

Salary Range: $80,000.00 to $155,000.00 annually bonus benefits
