The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express is seeking an experienced, hard-working, highly motivated, and creative trademark attorney as a member of the Intellectual Property Law and Strategy Group (IPLS). The attorney in this position will work with clients globally across multiple functional areas to strategically protect the company’s trademark and copyright intellectual property interests. The work will include assisting with maintaining the company’s global trademark portfolio, providing support for the company’s brand enforcement program, client counseling on trademark and copyright related issues, and supporting IP-related transactions by reviewing, revising and negotiating agreements and conducting due diligence.
Here are just some examples of what you will do in this role:
Assisting with all aspects of protecting the company’s trademark and copyright assets, including trademark strategy, clearance, prosecution, claims and enforcement, licensing, counseling, and transactions, to drive a proactive, business-oriented trademark program worldwide
Preparing and responding to cease and desist letters and handling other enforcement matters, including domain name disputes, UDRP actions, and matters related to the use of trademarks on social media platforms essential.
Assisting with anti-counterfeiting and enforcement (including takedown notices, cease and desist letters, DMCA).
Providing clear, actionable, and business-savvy trademark and copyright advice to business clients and colleagues
Providing support for brand protection matters, including policing core marks and managing enforcement of trademark rights and copyright
Conducting trademark, copyright, and IP due diligence for corporate transactions
Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating IP licenses and provisions in transactions, primarily focused on trademark and copyright issues
Providing legal review and support for generative AI projects
Working with and supervising outside counsel
Working with and supervising paralegals
Educating internal stakeholders on trademark and copyright
Monitoring trademark and copyright legal developments for issues that could impact the company’s business
Participating as team member and an active contributor to the overall IP strategy
Skills and minimum qualifications:
2-4 years relevant experience working as trademark attorney in a law firm or in-house legal environment
Experience with both domestic and international brand management, including trademark clearance, prosecution, policing and enforcement, and licensing
Comprehensive understanding of intellectual property case law, rules, and regulations
JD and admission in good standing to a state bar
Excellent interpersonal skills and collaborative work style
Excellent relationship building, influencing, and negotiating abilities
Ability to communicate complex issues effectively, both verbally and in writing; fits message to audience
Ability to prioritize and handle shifting priorities, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
Strong professional drive, self-directed, and highly motivated with a growth mindset
Demonstrated attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong organizational and time management skills.
Qualifications
Salary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually bonus benefits
