CUCE-NYC engages Cornell programs, students and faculty to partner with NYC communities in generating, using and translating cutting edge research.

Our Mission

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) connects communities with research from Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Human Ecology to enrich and empower New York state neighbors, local businesses, towns and cities. With a presence in all New York state counties and the five boroughs of New York City, local CCE offices provide programming and resources tailored to the needs of their communities.


What You Will Do

This new Extension Support Specialist (ESS-1) position provides essential services for the Hydroponics, Aquaculture, and Aquaponics Science and Technology Education Program (HAASTEP) of Cornell University Cooperative Extension-NYC (CUCE-NYC). Primarily based at HAASTEP's Learning Labs at the NYC Department of Education's Food and Finance High School (FFHS) located in the Park West Educational Campus, the ESS-1 will plan, develop, implement and maintain aquaculture, hydroponics, greenhouse aquaponics, and related programming with/for high school students at the FFHS Learning Labs. The ESS-1 will also plan, develop and implement programming at select schools and community organizations throughout NYC.


Across all locations, responsibilities include maintaining, and in some cases designing and building, the hydroponic/aquaculture/aquaponics systems on which the program relies. Maintenance includes propagating, growing, harvesting, and distributing a wide range of food plants and care of fish. The physical hydroponic/aquaculture/aquaponics systems provide the context and infrastructure essential to the core mission of HAASTEP and CUCE-NYC: engaging and teaching youth, teachers, and youth service workers about STEM, team science, food systems, and the many factors contributing to food sovereignty and understanding environmental sustainability using hands-on learning. Engaging teachers and youth workers and providing them with professional development and technical support are key elements in ensuring the program's reach and implementation in multiple sites throughout NYC.


This position involves close collaboration with Cornell faculty and subject matter experts based in Ithaca, NY, and reports to CUCE-NYC's Executive Director. It will require occasional travel.


There are 2-3 available openings for this fully onsite, benefits eligible, term position. The term date is September 30, 2025, with the possibility of annual renewal.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Ability to form and sustain partnerships that will ensure quality engagement of teachers, schools, and community organizations.

  • Capacity to engage in collaborative planning and program development.
  • Basic computer skills and strong competency using Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to speak and understand conversational Spanish in addition to English.
  • Knowledge of other locally spoken language or languages.
  • Familiarity and/or experience related to key aspects of CUCE-NYC programming such as nutrition & health, 4-H/youth development, parenting education, and urban gardening.
