The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director, Revenue Cycle, the Epic Business Intelligence Developer (BID) is responsible for all stages of the business intelligence cycle: understanding business objectives, collecting business requirements and translating them into data requirements, designing and developing reports or dashboards (code and visualization), scheduling and deployment of business intelligence components in accordance with supplied standards and best practices, and completing accurate and timely documentation. Collaborates with business and technology departments to understand system data and its use, data analysis and validation, and providing support around the data and how it is integrated. Monitors production systems for issues and resolves issues or elevates them for resolution when necessary.

This position supports transforming data into actionable intelligence and insights to provide information that enhances decision-making abilities to derive and support process improvements. The position partners with business leaders to understand analyses and the impact of cause-and-effect relationships by utilizing established data sources, Data Warehouses, and Excel tables to collect, integrate, extract, analyze, and present information in reports, dashboards, and visualizations. These activities are undertaken and executed to support organizational goals and to partner with management, project champions, and process owners to deliver results.

Responsibilities

Operations

  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of client/department business strategies, processes, and services to aid in data interpretation
  • Analyze clinical, business, and operational processes, workflows, and source systems. Identify the data sources, understand the sources systems and the workflows that feed them
  • Creates and maintains custom reports on key business areas and indicators to identify and track trends, process improvement efforts, and other business outcomes
  • Demonstrates analytical critical thinking skills for process development or problem resolution. Generate meaningful and insightful analytics from internal operational data, enabling business leaders to make data-driven decisions
  • Create summary reports, data extracts, and other financial analyses for management and external vendors from disparate systems
  • Conceptualize and build creative data visualization dashboards to effectively communicate key business insights and tell a compelling 'story'
  • Support ad hoc questions and analyses
  • Assists in the development of standardized data collection, the use of benchmark data and reports across system hospitals
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of Mission's key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop repeatable, efficient processes to measure and forecast these metrics
  • Operates under limited guidance and work assignments involve moderately complex to complex issues where the analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors
  • Makes recommendations for changes in the current departmental systems and processes and contributes ideas and suggestions for solutions to the current system's problems
  • Responds to urgent, impromptu, and unplanned situations by assessing their level of importance, instituting appropriate action and information appropriate management

Technical

  • Pull, consolidate and manipulate data from multiple large data sets, analyze the results, and build reports, dashboards, and presentations
  • Create/ Modify SQL queries using Epic's Clarity database
  • Adjust query outputs in Excel, add formulas, charts, and graphs to summarize data and show underlying trends.
  • Perform ad-hoc data analysis using SQL, BI, Excel, and other tools as necessary
  • Evaluate, trouble-shoots and lead root-cause analysis for any errors or gaps identified during the development/validation of data/reports
  • Continually develop professional skills, and maintain Epic certifications where appropriate, including obtaining additional certifications in other modules

Strategy

  • Utilizes innovative thinking and tools for the optimization of processes, reports, and tasks
  • Identifies best practices for report optimization and establishes mechanisms to share expertise and knowledge amongst peers
  • Provides outstanding client service and contributes to FPO's mission of utilizing information technology to improve patient care
  • Facilitates system and operational process optimization through data-driven analysis to achieve competitive excellence measured against industry benchmarks

People

  • Provides guidance and support to Optimization team Revenue Cycle Analysts
  • Partners with the CUIMC team to develop, and validate necessary data structures, and support user acceptance testing(UAT) when necessary
  • Obtains feedback from key stakeholders in departments, central business office & vendors to impact reporting-related activities
  • Develops and maintains excellent working relationships with Columbia University Departments, EPICTogether, CUIMC, and vendors.

Compliance

  • Represents the CRO Management Team on committees, task forces, and work groups. Negotiates workable compromise solutions to complex problems between the FPO, CRO, and other departments, outside vendors, etc.
  • Conforms to all applicable HIPAA, Billing Compliance, and safety policies and guidelines.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Revenue Cycle Officer and Directors of the CRO.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent, plus a minimum of 4 years related experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience within a multi-facility healthcare system using EPIC
  • Certification and experience in Epic Clarity/Caboodle Data Models
  • SQL development experience
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Qlik Sense, Tableau, PowerBI, etc.)
  • Experience with Cogito Tools (Reporting Workbench, Radar, SlicerDicer)
  • Strong Analytical background with previous experience in Epic Clarity Data Model, Oracle SQL Database, and Revenue Cycle (PB) to support BI Development out of Epic
  • Provide service reporting solutions to empower customers to leverage data to make informed decision
  • Ability to combine data from multiple sources and understand the limitations of various data sources
  • Ability to work in high-pressure situations, meet deadlines, multi-task, and be highly adaptable to meet changing needs in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Must be able to create and deliver high-level presentations for senior leadership and other organizational stakeholders
  • Ability to juggle several complex projects, while also handling ad hoc requests
  • Attention to detail, but with an ability to understand the big picture view and understand when projects or efforts have conflicting objectives
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships across multiple clients and vendors
  • Must be a motivated individual with a positive and exceptional work ethic

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or Masters candidate preferred
  • Epic Certification and or Knowledge in relevant subject areas (Cogito, Caboodle, Slicer Dicer, Cadence, or other relevant revenue cycle certifications)
  • Experience with EPIC workflows
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: insurance billing, collections, denials management as it pertains to commercial, managed care, government, managed care lines of business
  • Certification in EPIC Clarity; knowledge of Epic PB Module, Microsoft Office Suite, Power BI, or other data visualization tools or self
