New York University [EOI] Postdoctoral Associate in Atmosphere Ocean Science in New York, New York

The Center for Atmosphere and Ocean Science at the Courant Institute at New York University (NYU) is seeking an expression of interest for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the Climate Process Team (CPT) on Ocean Transport and Eddy Energy (https://ocean-eddy-cpt.github.io). This CPT is a collaboration involving multiple institutions, including New York University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, University of Chicago, Princeton, CU Boulder, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), and Brown University.

The role of the NYU postdoc will be to develop and implement new subgrid-scale parameterizations and to assess the accuracy of existing parameterizations in the ocean component (MOM6) of CM4 at eddy-permitting resolutions. The postdoc will be directly advised by Laure Zanna and Shafer Smith and will work closely with GFDL, as well as with the entire CPT.

The research will include developing novel parameterizations to account for the interaction between large-scale, mesoscale, and submesoscale fluxes of energy, momentum, and tracer fluxes. The work will be a combination of idealized simulations, mathematical theory, and analysis of global simulations.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $66,000 to $74,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer quality, as well as market and organization considerations and the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. in oceanography, climate modeling, fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, computational science, physics, or a closely related field.

For full consideration, please apply by September 30, 2023.

For full consideration, applicants should submit the following via Interfolio:

  • Curriculum Vitae with a list of publications,

  • Cover letter (no more than 2 pages) detailing their research experience, how their interests would fit the project advertise, their career plans, and available start date,

  • Names of 3 references who are willing to send a letter of recommendation.

The position will remain open until filled, but review of applications will begin November 1, 2023.

For further information, contact Laure Zanna (laure.zanna@nyu.edu) or Shafer Smith (kss3@nyu.edu).
