Book of the Month Book Scout in New York, New York

Summary: 

We are looking for an entrepreneurial Book Scout to sniff out the best new crime fiction for our members.  This person will research forthcoming titles, read manuscripts, share feedback on books read, and pitch recommendations they feel strongly about to the Editorial Director and CEO. This is a great opportunity for someone who is deeply passionate and knowledgeable about a wide array of crime fiction genres, has strong taste and good communication skills, and is excited about discovering and championing emerging authors. This job reports to the Editorial Director.

 

What you'll do…

  • Research, find, and advocate for books you think are excellent and have the potential to become commercially successful for Book of the Month

  • Leverage your existing relationships with industry partners, and develop new relationships, to learn about forthcoming titles that Book of the Month should consider

  • Read manuscripts and evaluate their potential for the Book of the Month audience

  • Provide analysis and feedback on titles read and propose recommendations to the Editorial Director

    About you:

  • 4+ years full time experience; at least 2 as a book scout, literary agent, professional acquisitions editor, or book journalist with fiction experience. 

  • Deep knowledge of and familiarity with crime fiction genres including domestic suspense, psychological suspense, police procedural, thriller, horror, mystery, international and others. 

  • Strong existing network in the literary community.

  • Savvy communicator.

  • Entrepreneurial mindset and approach to work; can build what doesn’t exist in an iterative fashion.

  • Hard worker with a deep desire to rise in a business oriented environment. 

  • Familiarity with the Book of the Month brand and excitement to help us pursue our mission.

    Salary Range: $70,000 - $100,000
