Biostatistician I

Full-Time

Overview:

The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care & Pain Management is engaged in perioperative population sciences and outcomes research. Its goal is to develop, analyze, and disseminate population-based research that leads to improvements in the quality, safety, outcomes and efficiency of care.

We are currently seeking a Master’s level Biostatistician who will work closely with population science researchers at HSS. This position entails collaborating on several projects primarily with the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Management to identify and manage small institutional and larger national datasets, to conduct univariable and multivariable analyses, and to report research findings in order to improve the effectiveness, safety, and efficiency of health care delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design observational studies based on institutional electronic health record data and national administrative medical databases such as Premier Perspective, National Inpatient Sample, Medicare, and the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) databases.

  • Data management and statistical programming.

  • Conducting data analysis and report writing under the mentorship of senior staff.

  • Use modeling techniques and tools in analyzing and specifying data structure.

  • Implement the best practices in data management to ensure the integrity of the data, the quality of data processes and deliver analyzable or analyzed data to a variety of internal and external clients.

  • Maintain data integrity and support data analysis as necessary.

  • Make recommendations and assist in data capture, data extraction and analysis.

  • Develop, maintain and implement procedures for data entry, data cleaning, documentation and other administrative tasks.

  • Document, implement, maintain and recommend operating methods to improve processing, distribution, data flow, collection, database editing procedures.

  • Assist faculty and staff with queries, statistical analyses, reports and technical difficulties related to data retrieval.

  • Design and write custom applications needed to ensure the database meets requirements for the entry, management and reporting of data.

  • Identify and recommend solutions to data management issues.

  • Train staff with varying degrees of knowledge to effectively use the database system.

  • Maintain knowledge of the current regulations and technologies related to data management.

  • May write and prepare manuscripts and other materials for internal and external audiences.

  • May access data in the Data Warehouse, as required.

  • May define parameters for file or space utilization.

  • In case of methodological challenges in research projects the candidate will be able to educate her/himself using methodological literature or senior staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Biostatistics or a related discipline (such as Epidemiology, Public Health, Computer Science, Mathematics, Econometrics, Engineering, Physical Sciences)

  • Experience with regression and survival analysis.

  • Excellent computer skills are required including experience with programming in SAS, Stata, SPSS, S-Plus, and/or R.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Candidates must have excellent written and communication skills in English and must be able to work independently, under minimal supervision, and as part of a team.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience as a Statistical Programmer or Analyst.

  • Previous collaborative research experience with health care related data is a plus.

Pay Range - Minimum

USD $80,000.00/Yr.

Pay Range - Maximum

USD $90,000.00/Yr.
