Position Summary

This laboratory position is for a manager of a human biospecimen biorepository and includes freezer facility management, including sample acquisition from collaborating labs, the distribution to other sites, inventory, and sample organization. The major responsibilities include, but are not limited to, receiving and inventory of human biospecimens, maintaining inventory, managing biospecimen distribution and shipment to collaborators, monitoring the function of multiple -80 freezers, overseeing maintenance, and being part of a freezer emergency response team.

This position is in the Brain Health Imaging Institute in the Department of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM). The employee with work closely with laboratory members of the Lipidomics and Biomarker Discovery Lab in BHII as well as other BHII Principal Investigators. The work environment includes collaborators across multiple departments and university settings.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collects samples from collection sites and delivers samples to freezers maintaining proper sample handling conditions for the integrity of the samples.

  • Collects, maintains, organizes inventories and distributes biorepository samples including blood, CSF, tissue or other biospecimens, using electronic databases.

  • Maintains an accurate inventory of biospecimens using LabCollector or other similar databases. Manages the study biospecimen lifecycle for large cohorts, biorepository and prospective studies.

  • Ensures that freezer facilities and equipment are in optimal and proper working condition. Coordinates preventative maintenance and repairs as needed for freezers and other laboratory equipment.

  • Will be responsible for the receipt, storage, cataloguing, inventory and shipment of samples within and between institutions.

  • Order supplies/equipment/reagents as authorized or ensure that needs are escalated appropriately. Receives supply orders and confirms accuracy of delivery.

  • Provides technical support to faculty and staff including training of new employees, residents, postdoctoral associates, fellows and students in sample inventory, freezer management and freezer emergency response.

  • Ensures a clean working area and is responsible for proper disposal of biohazards. Ensures that safe laboratory practices are followed, including the use and disposal of biohazardous materials.

  • Ensures adherence to laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), established guidelines and work instructions.

  • May participate in planning and carrying out experiments and laboratory assays related to biomarker analyses of biospecimens. May assist in preparing research protocols.

  • May analyze data using computer software and reports results to the principal investigator(s). May assist in editing scientific publications, abstracts and posters.

  • Receive and organize laboratory safety training certificates for employees who work in the lab.

  • Take appropriate WCM trainings and keep up-to-date on laboratory safety training.

  • Responsible for additional responsibilities as necessary to support all other daily activities of research studies.

Education

  • Master’s, PhD or other health science related graduate degree in science or health science related field is preferred.

Experience

Approximately 2-5 years of laboratory research and biorepository management is preferred.

Prior experience in a laboratory setting is required.

Prior experience management of biospecimens and inventory is required for the position.

Experience entering and managing data in clinical research databases including LabCollector, REDCap, OpenSpecimen, OnCore is preferred.

Bench lab related experience including performance of laboratory assays, is preferred.

Minimum three-year commitment due to a substantial training effort associated with the position.

Prior experience with inventory management and biospecimen handling is preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to assist and collaborate effectively and efficiently with team members.

  • Ability to plan and prioritize work while responding flexibly to rapidly changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite and database applications.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Phlebotomy certification is preferred.

  • Acquire and maintain C-14 certification from the FDNY (Category C-14, Supervising Non-Production Chemical laboratories).

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Standard laboratory conditions.

May directly assist in onsite experiments where samples are collected.

Ability to work flexible hours and quickly respond to emergent conditions.

Availability for emergency freezer response during non-standard work hours if necessary.

This position will require handling of biologic materials from human subjects.

This position may require handling of radioactive material and/or biohazards.

This position may require standing or sitting for long periods of time.

This role may require working within Biologic Safety Level 1, 2 and/or 3 facilities.
