About the Education Department

The Met’s Department of Education—dedicated to making art meaningful and accessible for everyone—is central to the mission of the Museum. Serving over a quarter million people each year, the Department is a national and international leader in museum-based education and public programming, pushing boundaries through continuous innovation and experimentation. In-person and virtual programs include high school and college internships that promote career development and diversity; PreK–12 educator programs that train teachers to integrate art into curricula across disciplines; performances, concerts, lectures and symposia that feature preeminent artists and scholarship; daily tours in multiple languages, and so much more.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

As the Associate Educator, you will be part of the Accessibility team responsible for in-person, virtual and hybrid access programs, initiatives, resources, and partnerships with various local and global organizations. You will support the Senior Managing Educator on collaborative efforts to improve accessibility throughout the Museum. You will oversee the daily implementation of Access programming and work with other areas of Education and throughout the Museum to create experiences that include and represent the experiences of people with physical, cognitive, sensory, and other disabilities.

You will work collaboratively with other educators, Museum staff, and external partners to assess needs, plan, promote, implement, and evaluate programs, resources, and accommodations with an aim of creating accessible and inclusive museum experiences. You will establish and sustain strategic external partnerships that expand the impact of the Museum’s activities and enable The Met to reach new audiences. You will contribute to professional and community networks locally, nationally, and internationally to increase the visibility of these programs, strengthen the Museum’s capacity to include disabled people in all aspects of the Museum, and foster the Museum’s position as a leader in the field of disability inclusion.

Some early morning, evening and weekend hours required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • In alignment with the Education Department’s vision and Museum’s strategic plan, support the development and implementation of a strategic vision and goals for Access team programming and partnerships.

  • Collaborate with colleagues within and external to the Access team to design an array of programs with diverse audiences. Including those with physical, cognitive, sensory, and other disabilities.

  • With the support of the managing educator, articulate pedagogical goals and strategies; plan, and implement programs.

  • With the support of the managing educator, evaluate programs and report on effectiveness.

  • Research and test new interdisciplinary methods to reach audiences, engage visitors, and support new narratives and conversations.

  • Manage daily oversight of select Access programs within and outside the Museum related to exhibitions and collections.

  • Build and sustain relationships with various community organizations that can help the Museum to connect with new audiences and deepen program impact. Establish new and sustain existing external partnerships with support from the Access team.

  • Together with the senior managing educator, develop strategies to encourage dialogue throughout the Museum around disability identity and representation in the Museum’s collections, programming, and interpretation. Collaborate with museum, disability studies, and other internal and external colleagues and the disability community to further develop the Museum’s disability justice initiatives. Contribute to Museum-wide efforts to improve accessibility throughout the Museum, in collaboration with the Senior Managing Educator and staff in other departments, including providing accessibility/disability-related training.

  • Communicate with key audiences about Access Programs. Collaborate with other Education teams, Marketing, Design, and Digital Media to actively promote offerings

  • Supervise teaching and assessment of contract educators/teaching artists and volunteers and contribute to professional development and training for these groups. Recruit and supervise interns and volunteers.

  • With the Senior Managing Educator, prepare and manage budgets and draft proposals, and reports for funders and stakeholders.

  • Engage with and serve as a resource for peers across the field Share expertise and experience at conferences and through publications.

  • Other related duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.A. in Art History, Museum or Art Education/Studies, Disability Studies, Art Therapy, or other related fields, or equivalent experience required.

  • 5 years experience working in a museum or other cultural organization; Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Experience and demonstrated interest in working with in the area of accessibility. Knowledge of or familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other legal requirements and best practices relating to accessibility.

  • Knowledge and experience of disability communities,

  • Ability to establish and sustain community relationships and build audiences.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of accessible and inclusive teaching practices that support learning and engagement by audiences with a range of disabilities.

  • Demonstrated skills teaching with original works of art.

  • Demonstrated capacity setting goals, prioritizing, implementing logistics for multiple programs simultaneously, and evaluating results. Excellent organizational skills, including ability to take initiative and multitask.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including disabled visitors.

  • Evidence of collaborative skills and experience leading teams.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, familiarity with database systems, and ability to use social media as an engagement vehicle.

COMPENSATION RANGE:

  • Pay Range: $85,000.00 - $90,000.00 / Annually

  • The advertised pay scale reflects the good faith minimum and maximum salary range for this role. The advertised pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage for any specific employee. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.

Location Requirements

At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. “Commuting distance” means that they are located in one of following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the “Tri-state and PA” areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
