Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Director - Environmental Health & Safety. In this role, the successful candidate develops, implements, manages, monitors, and improves assigned EOHS programs, supervises and mentors EH&S staff, and manages the EH&S division when the Senior Director and Director are absent.

Job Responsibilities:

    • STRATEGIC PLANNING: Analyzes external and internal conditions in order to plan for the development, implementation, management, monitoring, and improvement of EOHS programs. A. Conducts needs assessments based on external and internal conditions. B. Establishes priorities based on identified needs. C. Develops overarching goals based on identified priorities. D. Works with EH&S staff and members of the NYU Langone community to translate overarching goals into long- and short-term goals. E. Provides EH&S staff and members of the NYU Langone community with the direction they need to implement goals.
    • FISCAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT: Develops and manages the budget for assigned EOHS programs in accordance with institutional guidelines.
    • TECHNICAL DIRECTION: A. Communicates information to staff, vendors, and members of the NYU Langone community. B. Answers questions, troubleshoots, and problem solves complex issues. C. Reviews reports for appropriate methodology and technical accuracy. D. Periodically evaluates the condition, function, and appropriateness of EH&S resources. Makes recommendations as necessary.
    • STAFF, PROGRAM, AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT: A. Hires, supervises, develops, trains, motivates, evaluates, and counsels professional and administrative staff who report to him/her. B. Communicates and coordinates with regulatory agencies. C. Actively participates on institutional committees. D. Reviews, revises, approves, and maintains plans for safety and compliance issues. E. Develops training programs and materials. Coordinates and conducts training. F. Manages and maintains program and project records. G. Periodically evaluates the status of programs and recommends improvements.
    • POLICY AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: Proposes, designs, develops, and implements EOHS policies and programs based on emerging research, the mandates of regulators, and institutional needs and conditions. A. Develops and revises policies and programs to maximize compliance with pertinent regulations, guidelines and standards. B. Ensures information on issues, policies and programs is distributed to appropriate staff, vendors, and community members. C. Works cooperatively with representatives of administration, faculty, staff and students to implement and improve policies and programs. D. Monitors the quality and efficacy of policies and programs.
    • SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT: Develops efficient systems to comply with EOHS mandates of agencies such as TJC, the FDNY, the NYS DOH, the NYC DOMHH, OSHA, the EPA, the NYS DEC, the NYC DEP, the US Department of HHS, and the USDA. A. Analyzes requirements to identify similarities, differences, and conflicts. B. Recommends system improvements. C. Develops systems for monitoring quality and efficacy. D. Develops systems for conducting inventory. E. Develops systems for managing data, documents, records, and information. F. Develops systems for managing and maintaining equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental and Occupational Health Science, Science or Engineering
  • Certification by FDNY as a Fire Safety Director (FSD) required within 1 year of hire
  • 8 years progressive experience in Environmental & Occupational Health and Safety (EOHS), preferably in a hospital or academic medical center
  • 3 years supervisory experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulations, standards, guidelines, scientific literature, and technical issues
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret regulations and guidelines, and to develop and implement EOHS programs
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to wear and work in Level C personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to be on-call on a rotating basis to respond to off-hours emergency situations..

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Environmental and Occupational Health Science, Science or Engineering
  • Certification or licensing for at least 1 of the following: CIH, CSP, CBSP, or PE
  • Current HazWoper certification.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $117,107.95 - $157,590.42 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
