POSITION DETAILS

The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.

As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Engagement Journalism.

The Assistant Dean for Administration and Finance is a member of the senior leadership team of the Newmark J-School and has responsibility for overseeing all administrative and operational aspects of the school. This includes the state of the facility; the safety, caliber and satisfaction of the workforce; compliance with university and external regulations; and the School’s technological infrastructure.

Reporting to the Dean, the Assistant Dean will provide vision, leadership, and administrative oversight for a portfolio that includes Budget and Finance, Administrative Operations, Information Technology, Public Safety, and Campus Services/Facilities. They will keep the senior management team fully apprised of all issues related to the functionality of the facility and its technological infrastructure, and regulatory compliance.

The Assistant Dean for Administration will also have responsibility for strategic planning and ensures streamlined and effective administrative and fiscal operations. They will collaborate with the Graduate Center’s Office of Human Resources on matters relating to recruitment, employee relations, compliance and other HR policies.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

A preferred candidate should have:

  • Master’s degree in public administration, business administration, finance, higher education administration, or related field.

  • Eight (8) years of proven leadership role in administration or operations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of fiscal management.

  • Higher education experience.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work in diverse environment.

  • Strong writing and communication skills.

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Professional School Assistant Dean

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$155,000 - $165,000. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
