JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant / Endo Technician

JOB STATUS: Full-time, Non-Exempt

DIVISION/LOCATION: Gastroenterology

REPORTS TO: Nursing Supervisor/ Practice Director

POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant/Endo Technician is a skilled health professional who works closely with Physicians, Nursing Staff and Clerical Staff. This position requires direct patient care and communication, critical thinking and problem solving. The Medical Assistant/Endo Technician provides clinical expertise to ensure all patients receive high quality, efficient clinical care, as well as providing clerical support as required. The Medical Assistant/Endo Technician must exhibit a team-oriented attitude and ability to provide support to all members of the practice staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Medical Assistant

  • Assists physicians with patient office visits which includes rooming patients, interviewing patients, recording vital signs including pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, and temperature, entering information in patient electronic medical record.

  • Performs patient testing within scope of practice.

  • Prepares and reviews patient chart in advance of the patient’s appointment and reviews charts for completeness ensuring all required information is included; notes any deficiencies and utilizes all resources internal as well as external to obtain information to complete chart.

  • Organizes exam rooms, including general cleaning, upkeep, and re-stocking of supplies.

  • Performs administrative tasks including taking patient calls, verifying patient demographics and insurance, confirming and rescheduling patient appointments, form completions, prescription refills, referrals, prior authorizations and patient educational material.

  • Compiles and assists providers in the follow up of lab tests, X-rays, medication and preauthorization issues.

  • Participates in AM huddles as assigned.

  • Assists clerical department by requesting and scanning medical records into patient charts.

  • Scans all pertinent information into the electronic health record system.

  • Demonstrates appropriate hand washing technique to ensure proper infection control and follows universal precautions.

  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.

  • Demonstrates appropriate use of Red Bag Waste.

  • Other duties as assigned

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Endoscopy Technician

This position is accountable for: the care, maintenance, ordering, and stocking of the technical equipment and supplies within the Endoscopic suite; and creating a clean, safe environment for the care of patients. Assisting Physicians during endoscopic procedures within the Endoscopy procedure suite The Endoscopy Technician is considered a member of the procedural team.

  • Supervised by members of the management team, including nursing supervisor, practice director and/or the MD’s.

  • Performs necessary cleaning of the treatment room after each case including reprocessing of scopes.

  • Assists within the Endoscopic procedure suite, providing direct support to the performing physician, including placing biopsied tissue in specimen collection containers, appropriate and accurate labeling of all specimen collection containers.

  • Serves as a resource for the use and maintenance of equipment.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use sterile techniques.

  • Assist in moving and positioning the patient for procedures, as needed.

  • Maintains records/statistics in reference to the HLD of equipment, supplies and instruments.

  • Follows the established process for sending scopes and other equipment for repair as needed.

  • Assists in planning supplies for cases the next day, as appropriate.

  • Maintains inventory and assists in restocking/ordering of supplies.

  • Assists in maintaining an orderly arena for equipment, supplies and environment of the reprocessing room.

  • Knowledge in the use and care of a scope re-processor.

  • Knowledgeable of appropriate technique for packaging instruments and other supplies.

  • Detailed orientated and ability to task manage within a fast-paced environment

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant and/or Endo Technician preferred

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and adhere to all State, Federal and Local regulations; including, accreditation entity (AAAASF) required standards.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with physicians, patients, patient caregivers, co-workers, management and outside vendors.

  • Must possess critical thinking skills, flexibility, a positive attitude and the ability to work independently.

  • Travel to any of the Premier Medical Group locations may be necessary upon request.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED required.

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant and/or Endo Technician preferred

  • Previous Gastroenterology experience in an ambulatory care setting and/or Endoscopy Center as a Medical Assistant and/or Endo Technician preferred
