General Scope of Duties

Connecticut College is a highly selective, private, coeducational liberal arts college located in southern New England overlooking the Long Island Sound and the Thames River in the historic seaport of New London, Connecticut. Founded in 1911, the College enrolls 1900 men and women from 42 states and 70 countries. The 750-acre campus is an arboretum, and is supported by a staff and faculty of more than 800.

A member of the Office of Student Engagement, the Assistant Director contributes to the mission of the department by developing, implementing, and supervising outdoor adventure-based programs, the club sports program, campus leadership/teambuilding initiatives, and providing departmental support for the comprehensive program offerings of the Office of Student Engagement.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create strategic vision for outdoor adventure-based programming including Outdoor Adventure student trip program, on campus outdoor recreation opportunities, and waterfront opportunities.

  • Supervises volunteer Outdoor Adventure student leaders in creating and implementing day and weekend wilderness trips for the campus community. Duties include but not limited to, program area selection, activity selection, program cancellations (weather), risk management reviews, permitting, local access, transportation, equipment issue and de-issue, menu planning, and wilderness curriculum creation.

  • Responsible for the oversight and coordination of the club sport program (risk management, club president development, league/sport compliance, club coach supervision, club sport trainer supervision, club sport policy development, coordinate team travel, develop strategy for athlete recruitment).

  • Develop on campus teambuilding workshops to fit the learning outcomes for various departmental groups, campus programs, student organizations.

  • Partner and collaborate with the Department of Athletics to help foster and create recreation opportunities for the student community including but not limited to, club sport management/scheduling, intramural events, and use of indoor climbing wall.

  • Develop campus leadership initiatives (conferences, emerging leader program, etc.).

  • Deliver and oversee leadership training for student clubs and organizations.

  • Serve as a liaison between Office of Student Engagement and the Camel Card Office in regards to all transportation issues, including overseeing the student driver approval process and Camel Van hours.

  • Provide periodic staffing support for special events including Orientation, Festivus, Floralia, late night programming, Moonlight Breakfast, Senior Week, class events, and others.

  • Serve as a primary staff on site for occasional campus programs.

  • Serve on Student Life, and College-wide committees.

  • Serve as a primary on-call administrator for after-hours emergencies as assigned.

  • Additional duties as assigned; evening and weekend hours required.

  • This is a twelve-month, live-on position. Night and weekend hours required.

    Education and Skills

  • Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Recreation, Experiential Education or similar discipline (preferred).

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in a related field – preferably some experience working at a residential, liberal arts institution.

  • Able to develop and sustain relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and other constituent groups.

  • Well-organized and adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Capable of handling confidential information with a high level of integrity.

  • Possesses strong public speaking and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration.

  • Seeks opportunities to increase personal knowledge of student development theory, current trends and best practices.
