Posting Summary | The Department of Theater at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, invites applications for tenure-track faculty Assistant or Associate Professor of Theater History and Dramaturgy and Head of BA Theater, with an anticipated start of September 1, 2025. Leveraging its geographic placement between New York City and Philadelphia, the Theater Department at Mason Gross has an established history as a premiere school for theater artists. We are looking for a dynamic theater scholar and administrator to teach undergraduate theater history and dramaturgy and to head the BA in Theater. We are interested in developing our curricular offerings by adding new courses in dramatic studies and welcome a diversity of approaches and expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate (BA and BFA) courses in theater history and dramaturgy - including, but not limited to, performance theory, theater criticism and general education courses related to theater and theater making. The role will also serve as the head of the department's BA program. They will work collaboratively with colleagues to evolve the BA curriculum. They will function as an advisor to BA students, inspiring and mentoring these students in their academic progress and career development. As a tenure-track faculty member, the professor will be required to conduct original research and/or practice in their area of expertise; publish scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals and academic publications and contribute to the field of theater studies through innovative research, critical analysis, and artistic practice. The professor will be expected to collaborate with faculty to develop and refine the theater curriculum, participate in departmental meetings and committees, and contribute to the overall growth and direction of the theater program. We are committed to developing theater artists of the highest caliber who are prepared to join the profession as the next generation of practitioners and innovators. Our department includes approximately 150 undergraduate students, with a total faculty of 34 (15 fulltime) and production and administrative staff of 14. The Theater Department offers four BFA programs in Acting, Design, Dramaturgy and Production; BA in Theater Arts (major / minor). Mason Gross School of the Arts, a vibrant community of artists and scholars with academic programs in music, theater, dance, filmmaking, and art & design, is committed to pursuing excellence, innovation, and inclusivity. Its roughly 1100 students, of whom slightly more than half are students of color, reflect the diversity of New Jersey, the fourth most diverse state in the nation.
