Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Coordinator I for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The International Student Support Program Coordinator at the Office of Global Engagement plays a crucial role in assisting and guiding international students enrolled at Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Reporting to the Director of Global Engagement, this position involves developing and implementing programs and services that aim to enhance the international student experience, facilitate cultural exchange, and support academic success. Candidate must understand the unique challenges faced by the international student population and should promote a safe and healthy environment for our diverse student community.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Supports recruitment and retention of SEBS international student population by providing data analysis of international student mobility trends, entry-level advising on admissions and immigration, and supporting students through both personal and academic concerns while enrolled with SEBS.
  • Maintains and supports international partnerships involving student and research mobility.
  • Collaborates with various offices and departments to coordinate programs and services designed to meet the unique needs of the international student body.
  • Organize campus programming, cultural events, and workshops aimed at promoting cross-cultural understanding and inclusion.
  • Administrative and office support as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of experience working with international students.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the required experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders, such as students, faculty, and staff.
  • The candidate should also have experience in event planning and coordination, as well as strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team and should be able to prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • The candidate should also have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and should demonstrate a passion for supporting international students and promoting cross-cultural understanding.
  • The candidate should have a basic understanding of visa regulations within the U.S. higher education context.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the challenges faced by international students and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • They should also have knowledge of international student services and be able to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • A commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential for success in this role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A master's degree in education with a specific lens on international education, higher education, or student affairs, along with 2 years of direct experience working with international students.
  • A strong understanding of visa regulations is highly desirable.
  • Candidates should also have expertise in international student recruitment and retention strategies and experience analyzing trends in international student mobility.
  • Experience in budget management and familiarity with Rutgers' financial processes is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is highly desired as it would enable effective communication and collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders, thereby enhancing the office's ability to support international students and promote cross-cultural understanding.
Equipment Utilized
  • The position requires proficiency in Microsoft Suites, particularly Excel.
  • Familiarity with university financial systems, such as Cornerstone, is preferred but can be learned on the job.
  • Additionally, the candidate should have a general understanding of using social media, including non-US platforms like WeChat, for program promotion.
  • Knowledge of Canva or similar marketing software tools is also beneficial.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • The position will involve some night and weekend hours.
  • Attending conferences or recruitment events may also require domestic and international travel.
  • Also, the candidate should be able to travel throughout campus for various events and fairs.
  • There may be a need to move light boxes for campus events, which weigh no more than 25 lbs.
