Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Administration for the Department of Physics and Astronomy within the School of Arts & Sciences. This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy (P&A), the Director of Administration Works with the Sr. Department Administrator Supervisor and Business Manager III Supervisor in developing and implementing the financial and administrative structure of the Department.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides financial oversight.
  • Oversees financial services activities including planning, budgeting, and stewardship of a $45M budget. First or second level supervisor for 28 full-time staff and represents the Chair and the department on a variety of committees and workgroups.
  • Handles all departmental HR/Personnel functions (approximately 400 total payroll, including 120 graduate students, and 60 faculty), facilities management, and oversight of administering the undergraduate and graduate academic programs.
  • Works with the appropriate faculty committees on space planning, laboratory safety, oversight of technical support staff and IT services.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in business or finance.
  • A minimum of five years of senior management experience with budgeting and supervisory responsibility (in higher education/research environment).
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to think strategically, handle complex organizational detail, and negotiate and resolve conflict.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in higher education in a research environment.
  • Familiarity with the operation, maintenance and safety requirements of scientific laboratories.
  • Must possess strong management and financial skills.
  • Must possess strong computer skills and data base systems expertise
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are extremely important.
  • The ability to creatively handle detailed work and multiple concurrent tasks is important.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree or MBA.
  • Knowledge of the University's regulations, procedures, and policies.
