Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Associate Director for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position is responsible for the organization, direction and financial administration of sponsored grant support for SEBS and NJAES by providing financial leadership and expertise to both pre-award and post-award grants administration.Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Partners with faculty and staff to develop the financial components of successful grant proposals.
  • Responsible for the management of the post-award grants financial management team (approximately six-eight staff) that administers policies and supports all sponsored awards managed by SEBS/NJAES, a large, complex unit of the university, currently responsible for $55 million in sponsored programs.
  • Provides timely and reliable financial information.
  • Assists with the organization of major proposals including multi-institutional proposals, to enhance their competitiveness with a focus on the financial aspects of proposals.
  • Meets regularly with the Grants Facilitator Supervisor to coordinate grants administration and establish priorities.
  • Maintenance of a service-oriented and customer focused financial management team is essential.
  • Primary responsibility and oversight for approvals and assignment of departmental approvals in Rutgers Research Administration and Proposal Submission System (RAPSS).

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; and five years of related professional experience in a financial/accounting/sponsored program function in a leadership or managerial role of increasing responsibility.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires skills in planning and organizing, integrating information, making decisions, and attaining results; excellent communication skills and computer literacy.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are critical.
  • Should have strong skills with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated experience with regulatory requirements and ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Broad understanding of grant financial management and procurement systems.
  • Experience leading teams and managing staff effectively.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to exercise independent judgement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of science and science-based funding agencies is desirable.
  • Experience working in higher education or a grant-making agency or organization is desirable.
Equipment Utilized
  • Should have strong skills with Microsoft Office applications, as well as experience with databased creation and management.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Office work environment.
  • Must have ability to occasionally travel to off site facilities.
