Position Summary/Description:

The Department of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks candidates for the position of Research Project Manager and Lead Interventionist. The Project Manager and Interventionist will work under the direction of Dr. Anna Kahkoska, Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

The Project Manager will work closely with Dr. Kahkoska and her research team to coordinate and oversee research activities relating to an externally funded 18-month study to develop and evaluate a Food is Medicine ( FIM ) intervention augmented by continuous glucose monitoring ( CGM ) technology for adults with type 2 diabetes and food or nutrition insecurity. This is a single-center 1:1 randomized controlled trial of 12 weeks total duration designed to test the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a CGM -augmented FIM intervention. The project will run 2025 – 2026.

Education and Experience:

We are looking for a team-member who is passionate about improving diabetes care and support for people living with type 2 diabetes who are underserved or impacted by the social determinants of health. The coordinator will be a central and critical role to facilitate project meetings and decision-making processes to ensure the research team and participant experiences are aligned and working toward common program outcomes. We seek an individual who will embrace the challenges of developing and testing innovative nutrition and diabetes interventions, including strategizing on how to increase the efficacy and accessibility of technology-augmented behavioral approaches. Strongly prefer candidate with experience in human subjects research, current knowledge of type 2 diabetes in adults in general, including nutrition, glucose monitoring, psychosocial care and behavioral health. Familiarity with type 2 diabetes clinical care and/or experience in routine healthcare settings preferred, but not required. Previous personnel management or leadership experience in a complex innovative environment preferred, but not required. Familiarity with EPIC , REDCap, and scientific writing are also a plus, but not required.

Essential Skills:

Registered dietitian (RD) and certified diabetes educator ( CDE ) certification required. The research study comprises a significant project management component; we will thus consider relevant professional and work experience alongside education or other relevant clinical training. Must be clinically strong, highly organized, detail-oriented, and responsive over e-mail. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, as well as outstanding leadership and organizational skills. Candidates should have some previous experience working as a research project manager/coordinator, including interactions with human research subjects in recruitment and retention efforts, as well as some experience managing project budgets.
