Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, or related field with appropriate experience; Master's degree preferred

  • Must be characterized, above all else, by a genuine desire to work with college students to assist them in reaching healthy resolutions to various problems and concerns that directly impact the student's personal and academic success and development

  • Familiar with TRIO Student Support Services mission and services

  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs of students from disadvantaged backgrounds and knowledge of issues affecting their academic potential

  • Ability to express oneself effectively in written and oral communications and present information in one-on-one and small/large group situations

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Basic computer skills

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with TRIO programs and understanding of TRIO SSS federal laws and regulations

  • Experience working with faculty/staff in a college/university environment

  • Preferential consideration given to candidates with backgrounds reflecting the student population being served: first-generation, low-income, ethnically diverse, or those with disabilities

  • Knowledge of postsecondary academic advising and financial aid procedures

  • Familiar with Moodle and FERPA

Job Concepts

  • Identify and recruit students for TRIO SSS program based upon eligibility and academic need.

  • Assist students in developing education plans that align with interests, skills, abilities, and lifestyle goals.

  • Provide individual and group advisement, i.e., academic, financial literacy, study strategies, career exploration, and personal support.

  • Assist students with applying for financial aid.

  • Monitor students' progress and modify services as needed to benefit students.

  • Contribute to the University's retention initiatives related to the students' personal growth, professional development, and academic progress towards graduation.

  • Teach designated SSS courses; develop and maintain relevancy of curriculum.

  • Develop and implement services and activities with project staff to meet TRIO SSS objectives.

  • Schedule, plan and facilitate group workshops.

  • Provide referrals when appropriate so as not to duplicate SSS services.

  • Coordinate cultural and educational activities/field trips and graduate/professional school campus visits for participants.

  • Supervise the hiring, training, and management of tutors and tutorial services for Student Support Services (SSS) and CONSAH participants.

  • Serve as a liaison to university departments and conduct SSS informational presentations.

  • Serve as Disability Support liaison for CONSAH; proctor exams for Disability Support students.

  • Contact area elementary, middle, and high school personnel to schedule STEM events.

  • Periodic travel to Alexandria, Leesville, and the main campus is required.

  • Initiate activities related to establishing a HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) chapter at Northwestern. Once the chapter is established, coordinate HOSA activities with the HOSA state organization, area high schools, and NSU Departments.

  • Serve on university and CONSAH committees as assigned.

  • Position requires working some evenings, weekends, and occasionally overnight.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
