We are looking for a Food Safety Operations Manager to join our team. The position will be located in Nashville, TN-United States.

Our vision for Food Safety is to support Amazon’s mission of offering the widest selection of products available, while protecting customers from potentially hazardous products. We are looking for a dynamic and organized self-starter to join our Food Safety team, focusing on Distribution and Retail/Grocery Food Safety. This role will own and execute major and high visibility goals and initiatives.

The Food Safety Operations Manager is crucial to building new program processes, improving existing processes, and executing program management of food safety and compliance initiatives. The candidate will work cross-functionally with other Food Safety team members, Food Safety consultants, Legal, Operations and Business stakeholders. The candidate should be able to successfully operate with high autonomy, both strategically and tactically.

Key job responsibilities

• Implement operational site programs and processes for receipt, storage, transportation, and disposal of food to ensure customer safety

• Risk assess retail operational processes, design and execute compliance interventions, leverage auditing mechanisms, and analyze regulatory impacts of business models.

• Enable scalable business solutions while prioritizing automation and program improvement. Leverage technology to manage compliance processes.

• Work independently with Site and Regional Ops Leadership to ensure food safety requirements.

• Monitor business metrics to track compliance and process effectiveness; using data to identify compliance trend.

• Continuously identify and communicate improvement opportunities.

• Develop and enhance Food Safety Operations programs for existing and emerging businesses;

• Write policies, standards, and SOPs for existing and emerging businesses; create and implement training programs to drive regulatory compliance execution at the site & network level;

• Write and edit business review documents to update business stakeholders about Food Safety and Compliance initiatives;

• Work with regulatory agencies for site inspections

A day in the life

In this role, Operations will be your primary customer. Daily activities include engagement with site and region Ops leaders and other stakeholder teams to translate technical Food safety information in easy to understand guidance. You will deep dive metrics and work quickly to unravel the root cause, align with Ops and business stakeholders to bridge the gap and mitigate impact to our customer and business. You develop strong partnerships with Ops and other stakeholder teams to enable scalable business solutions while prioritizing automation and program improvement. You own resolving site level food safety escalations (imminent health hazards, regulatory non-compliance). You evaluate existing processes and find innovative ways to improve compliance mechanisms and food safety programs.

About the team

North America Operations Food Safety Team supports Amazon Grocery Logistics, Core Fulfillment, Amazon Fresh and Go Stores, Hub/Grocery and non-Grocery Distribution Centers business sites and Food Safety Programs.The team is composed of three verticals: 1) Operations Management (Network, Site level 2) Central Programs, and 3) Launch & Operations Regulatory. Operations Management is the primary point of contact for business reviews and intakes of process improvements to business models. The Site Support team directly interface and support the sites. Central Programs is responsible for developing, implementing projects, and maintaining programs. Launch & Operations Regulatory is responsible for Food Safety compliance of design standards, launch processes, first and mid-mile food safety regulatory compliance, and regulatory permitting compliance across all food businesses.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of compliance program management, legal, governance, audit, risk/loss prevention, or equivalent experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

  • Experience handling confidential information

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Chemistry, Biology, or related field

  • 5+ years of experience managing Food Safety and Quality in a large scale retail grocery, food service or manufacturing environment;

  • Knowledge of retail food safety regulations (local, state, FDA, USDA)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of program requirements definition and data and metrics leveraging to drive improvements experience

  • Professional auditing qualification, or similar risk or compliance credentials

  • Experience with SQL and Excel

    • 7+ years of experience managing Food Safety and Quality in a large scale retail or manufacturing environment
    • Experience interacting with the state and local regulators including Department of Health
  • -Experience as a food manufacturing QA manager, auditor, or similar function;

    • Experience using and suggesting improvements to product management technology, including Customer Feedback Trending software, Facility Auditing or Response Management software, Supplier Database, or Product Life Cycle Management software;
    • Laboratory testing experience;
  • HACCP plan development experience (basic and/or advanced HACCP training);

  • -Online/retail experience;

    • Six Sigma/FMEA experience

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $66,800/year in our lowest geographic market up to $142,800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
