Job Summary:

JOB SUMMARY

The Research Assistant I is part of the Division of General Surgery within the Section of Surgical Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, working with a group studying the enteric nervous system, and will play a key role in contributing to research examining the post-natal maturation of the nervous system of the mesentery and intestine in mice and in humans. Project work will entail, but is not limited to, dissection of mouse tissues, immunohistochemistry with fluorescent microscopy, management of mouse colonies, and dissociation of tissues for flow sorting. Project responsibilities will include working closely with the P.I. and post-doctoral fellow to learn experimental techniques and perform experiments with graduated independence, managing mouse lines in a breeding colony including DNA isolation, genotyping, and timed matings, and helping to prepare data for analysis and publications. All laboratory members rotate through maintenance of items for laboratory operation and inventory stocking of supplies/reagents and general use buffers. The Research Assistant will interact with faculty, staff, and students within the laboratory.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

Conducts Wet Lab Experiments

  • perform calculations involving molarities, % solutions, serial dilutions, and statistical analysis of experimental results.

  • participate with maintenance of mouse breeding colony, including performing crosses, DNA isolation, and genotyping.

  • perform analyses of mouse mesentery and intestine using transgenic mouse lines

  • dissociate and prepare tissues for flow-sorting

  • prepare RNA isolates from flow-sorted cell populations

  • possibility of training to work with human tissue specimens depending on project needs

  • assist in laboratory operation and inventory maintenance on a rotating basis with other team members such as stocking lab supplies, reagents, and buffers
