Position Description

The Naturalist 2 for our Nature Centers is a Full-Time Civil Service position within the Parks Department. The Incumbent will perform skilled work involved in organizing, teaching and developing environmental education and outdoor recreation programs and assists with the day-to-day operations in Metro Park’s nature centers. The work schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday but may include variable hours including evenings and overnights.

Metro Parks offers a variety of facilities and programs throughout Davidson County including after-school programs for children, cultural arts classes, nature programs, sports leagues, ice hockey, fitness classes, art galleries, programs and services for seniors, as well as for those with disabilities. Currently, the department oversees nearly 16,000 acres of open space, including 178 parks and 100 miles of greenway. Metro Parks’ mission is to sustainably and equitably provide everyone in Nashville with an inviting network of parks and greenways that offer health, wellness, and quality of life through recreation, conservation, and community.

Typical Duties

  • Works to fulfill the mission of Metro Parks and to support the goals and objectives of the Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreation & Special Events division.

  • Organizes, coordinates, and implements programs that may involve environmental education, historical interpretation, natural sciences, and outdoor recreation activities for school groups, home schools, and scout groups.

  • Helps to ensures facilities and programs are well maintained, safe and accessible.

  • Inventories parks flora, fauna and other natural features.

  • Inventories and supervises the maintenance of culturally significant sites.

  • Responds to public inquiries and complaints and provides information related to the operations and programming of the nature center and park.

  • Helps to organize and supervise seasonal staff, volunteers and projects as directed by the Nature Center Manager.

  • Performs office duties: answer phone, field visitor questions, schedule field trips, register program participants complete operational duties, and write reports or other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Keeps current on trends in environmental education, natural sciences, wildlife education, and natural resource management.

  • Attends various departmental and community meetings.

  • Promotes public interest in the nature center and its programs.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Education, Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Sustainability, Education, Outdoor Recreation or a related field and two (2) years of environmental or nature related experience.

Additional experience may be considered in lieu of some education

LICENSES REQUIRED:

Valid Driver License

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience developing and conducting environmental education and/or outdoor recreation programs.

  • Experience supervising and managing volunteers

  • Ability to perform moderately physical work in undeveloped outdoor areas, often accessible only by hiking off-trail
