Position Description

The Administrative Services Officer 3 serves as a Juvenile Court interpreter based on standards noted in Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 42 (https://tncourts.gov/rules/supreme-court/42) . Performs related duties as required.

Davidson County Juvenile Court’s mission is to prevent problems, promote the positive potential in all people, and pursue fairness and hope.

Typical Duties

  • Provides English/Spanish consecutive and simultaneous in-court interpretation, as well as sight translation for defendants, victims, witnesses, and any parties needing language assistance during court proceedings.

  • Provides interpretation, in the appropriate mode, for case preparation based on Supreme Court Rule 42 (Standards for Court Interpreters). This includes pre-trial housing visitations with attorneys, meetings with family members, witnesses, etc.

  • Provides translation of court forms from English to Spanish when needed to facilitate the navigation of LEP individuals.

  • Assists with coordinating requests, and scheduling of interpreters for all language needs, including Sign Language, for in court proceedings as well as case preparation.

  • Evaluates the work of court interpreters to ensure the Court provides quality of language services to limited English proficient court users in court proceedings.

  • Assists with collecting, interpreting, and analyzing data for the computation and submission of statistical reports and records.

  • Manages and maintains simultaneous interpretation equipment, and any other equipment used for interpretation and/or translation purposes.

  • Maintains records of interpreter encounters, including language, type of proceeding, location, etc., in order to periodically evaluate the needs, and plan accordingly.

  • Focuses on improving or creating systems for interpretation/translation requests, to facilitate the workflow of the courts, while maximizing the interpreters and the State’s resources for language provision.

  • Performs other duties as assigned, including meeting all grant reporting requirements.

  • May be required to assist field staff by visiting youth and families in their homes, schools, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree plus one (1) year experience in an administrative or technical field.

*Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education. (1:1 Ratio)

Valid Drivers License

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in court interpretation with fluency in both English and Spanish

  • Knowledge and understanding of the juvenile court process and procedures

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite

  • Certified Court Interpreter through the Administrative Office of the Court of the State of Tennessee or a Credentialed interpreter from another state listed on the Tennessee's AOC's roster.
