Salary:

This position typically hires at a rate of $16.73/hour.

Role Overview:

This role is for a Groundskeeper position at TC Steele State Historic Site. The candidate should have experience with a zero-turn mower, experience with operating a chain saw safely, and the ability to work in all types of weather conditions.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Primarily mowing grass

  • Installs new plants and mulch

  • Weeding

  • Trimming

  • Invasive species control

  • Garden pond maintenance

  • Watering

  • Raking leaves and winter preparation

  • Maintains tools and equipment

What You'll Need for Success:

  • High school diploma or HSE (High School Equivelancy)

  • At least one (1) year of experience.Ability to operate hand and power tools as well as motorized equipment such as tillers, trenchers and weed eaters

  • Working Knowledge of garden plants

  • May have to stand or sit or kneel for long periods of time

  • May have to weed, rake or shovel using hand tools for long periods of time

  • Must be able to interact with public in a professional, helpful manner answering questions about the historic site and the garden restoration project

  • Must be able to do physical labor, lift up to 50 pounds, and repetitive movement such as digging

  • Must be able to work outdoors in hot or cold weather extremes for several hours at a time

  • Must follow detailed instructions on new duties or problem situations, and general instructions on routine duties

  • Must keep work area neat and clean at all times

  • Must maintain safe work practices at all times, including wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, etc, as required for the assigned task

  • Must use good judgment in when to ask for help or clarification

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
