Southern Company Analyst, EEP Eval & Measurement in Naperville, Illinois

JOB SUMMARY:

The position leads the design, development and execution of innovative analytic and research solutions to support the planning, program implementation and evaluation of energy efficiency programs. The position is highly analytical and will require the individual to blend the application of business, strategic, and design thinking with technology and quantitative / economic modeling methods to enable better data driven decision making. This position is responsible for managing and leading complex analytical projects requiring use of data analysis, data visualization, and statistical modeling techniques. The position will work closely with internal and external stakeholders such as program managers, commission staff, independent evaluators, and implementation vendors to accurately evaluate and measure energy savings. The role requires extensive collaboration with both internal and external staffs responsible for our residential and business programs, as well as assuring IT systems are modified to collect and track data, accounting and controls are updated, and ultimately the design allows for the programs and portfolio to pass cost benefit tests required under law.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: BA or BS in business, economics, engineering, accounting, mathematics or related field required.

Preferred: Master’s degree in business, public policy or engineering.

Special Skills:

•MS Excel, Power BI, MS Access, Statistical & Predictive Analysis, Database management, Azure, DAX, SQL, VBA, R, Python or similar tools.

•Knowledge of the gas industry (electric a plus); energy efficiency program planning, design, implementation and evaluation, and familiarity with state and national energy policy.

•Knowledge of relevant industry practice and legislation.

•Knowledge or experience in Process Excellence / Lean Six Sigma is a plus.

Position Related Experience: 2-4 years of related experience in energy efficiency evaluation or analytical and/or regulatory work.

OR any combination of education and work experience which permits the candidate to meet position work requirements.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Portfolio Planning and Operations Analysis

•Lead and support highly complex research, process improvement, feasibility studies, market analysis, segmentation analysis, economic impact studies, and data analytics studies to identify, design, and vet programs and policies through department leadership, other departments, and other stakeholders.

•Support the multi-year and annual strategic planning and operations processes; oversee the preparation of efficiency program goals ; establish targets; and program participation levels to assist in the Planning and implementation process.

•The position will assist in the design of existing and future energy efficiency programs and services, that relate to forecasting/reporting and analytical studies to improve existing energy efficiency programs and services.

•Understanding of the existing program designs and contracts to enhance existing programs by monitoring and tracking key performance indicators and developing program cost allocation methodologies.

•Manage planning efforts for program implementation activities associated with existing and new energy efficiency programs, products and services that meet statutory objectives, and process improvements that allow us to serve our customers more comprehensively.

•Analyze, interpret and report on program performance and evaluation and measurement verification (EMV) results, and make related recommendations and manage implementation of recommendations and annual program trackers.

•Identify, develop and validate assumptions, and product qualifying lists related to energy efficiency for the various analyses required for defining the department’s strategic plan/implementation and to support the decision-making process.

•Work with program managers to understand program goals that inform and prioritize data analysis projects to support strategic decision making

•Facilitate the annual project upload (PUP) data collection process, ensuring implementation data is passed into the Data warehouse, troubleshoot data invalids, confirm Technical Reference Manual (TRM) requirements are met for claiming savings and complete end of year reconciliation between PUP data, forecasting and accounting actuals

•Maintain knowledge of energy efficiency measures in TRM and have the ability to understand algorithms used and impacts of changes to the energy efficiency programs.

Data Analytics

•Lead development of a data analytics program that leverages Power BI data visualization, advanced analytics and big data to deliver on key business operational and strategic initiatives.

•Gathers, extracts, manipulates, analyzes and models data using analytical and statistical methods to assist with current and future planning decisions and programs.

•Researches and recommends new opportunities and appropriate market segments to target; analyzes data to measure the effectiveness of the energy efficiency program, measures and marketing campaigns.

•Perform econometric and statistical modeling and analysis in support of energy efficiency programs planning efforts.

•Clean and analyze complex data sets, collect weather data, merge data from various sources.

•Lead data visualizations to distill information and provide meaningful conclusions and recommendations internally and to industry clients.

•Communicate analysis plans, methodology, and findings in reports and proposals.

Explanation: This position does involve a number of routine updates to algorithms and formulae, the ability to apply changes to various models and planning tools/TRM document. Dynamic decision making and analysis is required to analyze data, and provide meaningful insights and answer operational questions having completed those analysis. Opportunities to self-direct analytical exploration into new areas is expected to take place and be presented as this analytical work is completed.

Tasks are varied and fairly complex.

Assignments are quite varied and highly complex.

Explanation: Most work performed requires a high degree of technical acumen, and organization to assure models, tables, planning tools and TRM align, and remain up-to-date. Small changes in one area can significantly impact the ability of the Portfolio to achieve goals and eliminate risk of disallowance or litigation overachieved goals. Deep understanding of these complexities and interdependencies is key.
