Job Title Senior Admissions Counselor

General Job Description

This is a professional position responsible for coordinating and implementing recruitment activities in the undergraduate admissions office for assigned population(s). Responsible for overseeing the campus visit experience and programs related to recruiting prospective students. Responsible for recruiting new undergraduate students for an assigned territory. Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising assigned staff, including student workers. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Associate Director of Admissions.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Coordinates and implements enrollment services programming related to the campus visit experience.

  2. Hires, trains, supervises, and coaches assigned staff, including graduate assistants and student ambassadors (Jack Walkers) assigned to campus visits and events.

  3. Represents the university at high school, community college, and university programs and events.

  4. Counsels and advises prospective students, families, and the general public regarding university policies and procedures, the admission process, general admissions information, pre-college planning, and post-college career opportunities.

  5. Reviews official high school and/or community college transcripts, application information, and standardized test scores as part of the undergraduate admission file review process.

  6. Collaborates with campus departments to accomplish essential job functions and participates in meetings and activities related to area of responsibility.

  7. Compiles regular and ad hoc reports and applies outcome data related to area of responsibility and recruitment initiatives.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

  8. Assists with developing, implementing, and tracking effectiveness of recruitment strategies.

  9. May represent the department on various university committees as needed.

  10. Performs special projects as assigned.

  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.

  2. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility.

  3. Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.

  4. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, presentation, and word processing software.

  5. Ability to analyze complex information and exercise sound judgment in making decisions.

  6. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  7. Ability to explain policies and procedures to students, staff, and the public.

  8. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

  9. Ability to train and supervise others.

  10. Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.

  11. Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.

  12. Ability to learn office and university-specific software.

  13. Ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license and SFA permit prior to employment.

  14. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

    Physical Demands

Physical ability to perform essential job functions, including ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time, lift up to 50 pounds, use hands to finger/handle/feel, talk, and hear regularly as well as close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. Exposure to weather conditions will occur when recruiting. Frequent travel by automobile.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree is required.

Required Experience and Training

Three years of related experience is required. Experience in recruitment and college admissions counseling is required. Supervisory experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in public relations, communications, or a related field is preferred. Experience in presentations, relationship building, event planning, travel coordination, customer service, student supervision, working with faculty and high school counselors, and Banner Student Information System is preferred.

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
