Site Environmental and Sustainability Lead
This role leads the environmental and sustainability efforts for the site, ensuring compliance with environmental safety regulations while driving sustainable practices across engineering, maintenance, quality and operations. As the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) on environmental safety and sustainability, you will be responsible for implementing strategies that reduce environmental impact, enhance energy efficiency, and promote sustainable operations in alignment with corporate sustainability goals. This role applies engineering expertise to optimize the environmental footprint of current operations. You will focus on delivering measurable reductions in CO2 emissions, improving waste stream management, and enhancing water and energy efficiency. Through the integration of sustainable technologies and continuous monitoring, this role will drive improvements in resource utilization and environmental performance, ensuring the site meets ambitious sustainability targets and industry best practices. This role collaborates closely with cross-functional teams such as Engineering, Operational Excellence, Facilities, Maintenance, and Operations to foster a culture of continuous environmental improvement and value creation. The role requires strong leadership, innovation, and technical expertise to drive both regulatory compliance and the integration of sustainability principles into day-to-day operations. The incumbent will actively embody Dynamic Shared Ownership (DSO) principles while leading with the Visionary, Architect, Catalyst, and Coach (VACC) leadership model.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role are to:
Leadership (VACC):
Visionary: Develop and communicate a clear environmental sustainability vision that aligns with corporate goals and industry best practices. Inspire and motivate cross-functional teams to integrate sustainability into site operations.
Architect: Design and implement innovative systems for energy conservation, waste reduction, water management, and resource optimization. Establish processes for continuous improvement in environmental performance metrics.
Catalyst: Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to implement sustainable practices across site functions. Drive change by identifying opportunities for environmental improvements and ensuring alignment with operational processes.
Coach: Mentor teams on sustainability initiatives and environmental compliance protocols. Promote a learning culture by offering development opportunities that elevate team knowledge and environmental expertise.
Sustainability Strategy & Leadership:
Lead the development of site-specific sustainability goals and implement initiatives to reduce the site’s carbon footprint, improve energy efficiency, and minimize waste.
Integrate environmental sustainability considerations into long-term planning for the site’s operations and capital projects.
Environmental Safety Compliance:
Serve as the site SME on environmental regulations, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal environmental laws (EPA, OSHA, etc.).
Conduct regular internal audits to monitor adherence to environmental standards and drive corrective actions for non-compliance.
Lead the development and implementation of programs for air quality management, hazardous materials handling, water conservation, and waste management.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Work closely with internal stakeholders such as quality, engineering, operations, and maintenance to ensure that sustainability is integrated into design, maintenance, and production activities.
Collaborate with Facilities and SSHE (Safety, Security, Health, and Environment) teams to implement environmentally sustainable solutions in facility management and site-wide processes.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement:
Drive innovation by identifying and piloting new technologies that enhance environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
Utilize data-driven decision-making and advanced analytics to monitor environmental performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
Lead projects focused on renewable energy, waste minimization, and circular economy principles, ensuring alignment with corporate sustainability initiatives.
Training & Development:
Foster a culture of environmental awareness through training programs that build team competency in sustainability and environmental safety.
Develop and implement training programs to ensure all employees understand their role in driving sustainable practices and maintaining environmental compliance.
Outcomes and KPIs:
Delivering reductions in carbon footprint and waste generation
Compliance with environmental regulations (EPA, OSHA, etc.)
Improved energy efficiency and resource optimization
Engagement of teams in sustainability initiatives

WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, sustainability, or related field
Strong knowledge of environmental regulations (EPA, OSHA) and experience leading compliance programs.
Proven ability to lead teams and implement cross-functional sustainability initiatives.
Demonstrated VACC leadership skills (Visionary, Architect, Catalyst, Coach) in fostering site capabilities, innovation and sustainability.
Experience in data analysis and using technology to drive performance improvements and innovation.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to influence teams and provide leadership across the organization.
Preferred:
- 8+ years of experience in engineering, maintenance, operations, or sustainability roles within manufacturing or industrial settings.
