Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineer in Multiple Locations, United States

Microsoft Entra Edge & Quality Services and Programs seeks a Principal Software Engineer to help our teams improve our Quality, Resilience and Reliability solutions within Microsoft Entra. This is an Individual Contributor role working across a group of teams and directly partnering with divisional executives. Effort you own improve the reliability of authentication and other identity services underpinning all other Microsoft’s services, including Microsoft 365 and Azure. Your responsibilities will include advancing our change tracking and safe deployment systems, overcoming scaling limitations of tenant-level observability and monitoring, and building the next generation of Copilot assisted incident management. Our services often process millions of requests per second, reliably powering hundreds of billions of authentications per day, and they meet challenging availability targets (>99.99%).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of improvements applicable to mission critical identity services ensuring they meet highest availability targets (99.99%+)

  • Build and enhance the next generation of Copilot-assisted incident management systems to decrease time to mitigate and time to notify customer of ongoing impact

  • Build solutions leveraging corpus of past incident response learnings to prevent repeat outages

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and executive leadership to drive project success and align with organizational goals

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience in your career history as a hands-on engineer working with distributed systems.

  • Extensive experience influencing executive leadership and executive stakeholders.

  • Strategic planning skills and demonstrated experience at building then executing a compelling roadmap.

  • Worked in a role where your team/organization conceived, built, operated, and evolved cloud services – including those which are ‘mission critical’ with challenging availability targets, or services which have reached significant scale – e.g., hundreds of millions of users, millions of API calls per second.

  • Possess technical acumen and an ability to translate what is really needed into clear requirements. You’re in the details and you obsess about the experience people have interacting with tools and process.

  • Verbal communications skills, you are comfortable presenting to any audience, customer, and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience

  • Deep practical experience operating high-scale services in production environments. Opinions on what great observability looks like, what safe deployments look like and how to troubleshoot and diagnose high-scale systems effectively.

  • Written communication skills. You are a storyteller; you can write in a compelling way for any audience and are comfortable crafting ‘6-pager’ roadmaps or deep dives into a topic.

  • Proven ability to lead and drive consensus across team, leadership, and even organizational boundaries and to deliver outcomes – the scope of this role is division-wide.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
