Microsoft Corporation Senior Structural Engineer in Mountain View, California

The Mixed Reality HW Mechanical Engineering team is designing the next generation of IVAS products for extremely rugged environments. We are looking for a highly motivated Senior Structural Engineer experienced to help engineer the product to survive drop, shock, mechanical and thermal loads, and other harsh environmental stresses.

This role is based in Mountain View, CA and requires on-site lab activity, with work-site flexibility of up to 50% work from home.

Responsibilities

  • You’ll assess design robustness by developing structural finite element analysis (FEA) models (ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc.) and empirical test plans using mechanical testing (Instron, strain gauges, etc.).

  • You’ll also document requirements and translate to decision decisions

  • Lead problem-solving teams in root-cause analysis to identify solutions to highly complex problems

  • Validate structural models and verify requirements are met at component, module and system level

  • Work alongside Mechanical, Materials and Thermal engineers to Guide mechanical design and product design decision

  • Drive Materials selection by providing reliable data, analysis and structural insights into material behavior

  • Occasional travel (domestic and international) to support design and manufacturing activities

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in structural design and a record of innovation and experience in FEA, experimental stress analysis, mechanical design and materials engineering

  • Demonstrated experience in Linear and Non-linear FEA to analyze structural problems

  • Demonstrated experience in material property measurement and data analysis

  • Demonstrated experience in translating customer and environmental requirements to simulation and drive design to meet requirements

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, OR related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, OR related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, OR related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience.

  • o OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years experience in Design of Experiments and statistical analysis of data

  • 3+ years proficiency in CAD (Computer aided design) tools such as Creo, Solidworks, NX, etc.

  • 3+ years industry experience in experimental stress analysis and measurement of material properties using tools such as Instron

  • 5+ years and proficiency in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools including ANSYS and/or ABAQUS

  • 5+ years using Linear and Non-linear FEA to analyze and find solutions for structural problems, preferably in the electronics industry

Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
