Job Description: Assists in the operation of spray painting equipment to apply protective coatings and paints to fabricated structural steel material and other objects as may be needed.

Duties: Performs some or all of the following:

1. Continually maintains good housekeeping practices for respective areas.
2. Load, unload, identify materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to direction of paint management.
3. May perform journey tasks, contingent on the level of experience and directions from the journey Painter.
4. Assists in preparing items and components for paint or coating materials by methods and techniques such as sanding, wire brushing, scraping, masking, taping, washing or wiping with solvents or other methods.
5. Use a variety of common hand tools and power tools such as sanders, paint pumps, test and measuring devices and operation of various drying ovens and fixtures in the performance of the simpler duties of the paint trade

Assists the journey/senior Painter with all work activities that include performing some or all of the following:

1. Select the appropriate paint or mix paints according to a pre-determined formula.
2. Operate equipment to clean, wash, strip, and sand, remove corrosion, fill dents or otherwise prepare fabricated steel items for application of paint and or other protective coatings.
3. Operate spray, dip, flow coating, brush and roll equipment or other painting or product coating equipment as required.
4. Paint small items and apply touch-ups.
5. Clean and maintain painting and coating, ventilation, compressed air and personal protective equipment.

6. Prepare and apply stencils, computer generated decals and barcodes on the finished products.

    

Education: Some college/vocational or technical training and OSHA 10 or 30 preferred.

Credentials: Any Industrial Painting Certificate preferred.

Type of Paints or Coatings: Water-based, Resinous, solvent drying paints, Catalyzed or polymerized paints, Bituminous coatings, Fire retardant coatings, Anti-Fouling paints, rust Inhibiting coatings.

Type of Substrate or Product: Ferrous Metal, Drywall, CMU. Concrete, Fiberglass, Nonferrous metal, other substrates as required

Surface Preparation Methods: Masking, Etching, Hand and power tool clean, solvent wipe, or brush off cleaning methods

Application Methods: Brush and roller, Airless Spray, Conventional Spray, Plural Spray

Major Work Area: Fabrication, Assembly, New Construction, Existing Construction

Specific Skills: Assists in the operation of equipment to prepare substrates for the application of protective coatings. Operate equipment to spray or coat. Prepare and apply stencils, decals and other painted graphics
