As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for providing key technical expertise and some leadership within the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Engineering organization. This role is focused on product development, continuous improvement, and released product engineering activities related to the HeartWare™ HVAD™ System (HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device).

The Mechanical Circulatory Support Operating Unit is responsible for Medtronic’s heart pump program. Called the HeartWare™ HVAD™ System, this business provides a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) that helps patients’ hearts pump and increases the amount of blood that circulates through their bodies. The HVAD System features the world's smallest centrifugal flow pump. 

This position can be located in Miami Lakes, FL. or Mounds View, MN. within the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) operating unit and requires on-site presence three days a week minimum, with additional on-site presence as required.

A Day in the Life

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer role. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Development of new mechanical and electromechanical systems, subsystems, and components.

  • Lead design activities on assigned projects in collaboration with or supervision of other department engineers. Interface with customers during exchange of technical information. Responsible for guiding/leading engineers to ensure design practices are used consistently. Supervise and direct Design Engineers and Senior Engineers. Ensure design standards are met and/or applied. Define design standards where applicable.

  • Subject Matter Expert - Provide technical expertise to other departments, i.e. Manufacturing, Marketing, Regulatory, Quality Assurance, Program Management, etc. Support development testing and failure investigation of legacy and new products.

  • Work with Manufacturing Process Engineering, and Quality Assurance Engineering to lead design engineering team through design changes required to maintain product supply, including verification and implementation phases. Support Manufacturing engineering, Production and Quality Assurance though production or supplier issues.

  • Works on significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. Exercises independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Creates formal networks involving coordination among groups.

  • Design Engineering liaison to vendors in procurement of components, subassemblies and contract services. Develop project documentation within the scope of Design Controls for the design and development of heart assist pump projects. Develop project schedules and identify resource requirements to meet continuity of supply objectives.

  • Work closely with Regulatory Affairs for submissions to appropriate worldwide regulatory agencies as part of Implementation phase.

  • Work with technical staff, Quality Assurance, Clinical Affairs and Regulatory in the development of Risk Management process as part of the change/improvement process.

  • Mentoring and supervision of less-experienced engineers

  • Design, document, assemble and test precision prototype and production fixturing.

  • Assist in the design and development, and perform sustaining engineering, of various mechanical and electromechanical components used in Medtronic MCS products.

  • Assist with bench testing of assemblies and parts to ensure performance.

  • Maintain top level engineering documentation.

  • Perform design characterization and design validation testing.

  • Write protocols & reports.

Qualifications

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLE, PLEASE BE SURE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ARE EVIDENT ON YOUR RESUME

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering, science, or related technical discipline

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in product development of medical devices or advanced degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering, science, or technical field with 5+ years of relevant work experience

Nice to Have

  • 10+ years of engineering experience within the medical device industry

  • Advanced understanding of FDA design controls, quality system regulations, failure investigation process and methodologies

  • Advanced Subject-Matter-Expert (SME) knowledge of the HeartWare™ HVAD™ System

  • PC application skills: solid modeling (SolidWorks), MS Project, EXCEL, Word, Minitab, Agile PLM

  • Advanced understanding and application of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)

  • Advanced understanding of Risk Management Process

  • Advanced understanding of Design-for-Manufacturability (DFM), Design-for-Assembly (DFA), and Medtronic Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM)

  • Project management and organizational skills

  • Strong written and oral communication skills (timely, clear, concise, accurate, conclusive, influential, targeted to audience)

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$122,400 - 183,600.00

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
