Job Title: Protection and Control Engineer
Job Description
Responsible for performing complex and high-level electrical engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of theory to solve well-defined problems or provide analysis. The role includes developing relay settings for zones of protection within a substation and performing peer reviews of the work of other engineers. The engineer will gain familiarity with pertinent equipment, materials, systems, and business processes, and provide mentorship, training, and guidance to lesser-experienced engineers.
Responsibilities
Review relay protection and control activities for 4kV through 765KV electrical substation projects.
Review Protection & Control (P&C) scopes for electric substation projects.
Prepare and/or review P&C engineering and designs for electrical substation projects.
Participate in project scheduling, resource planning, and cost control for assigned projects.
Provide engineering support for project installation, commissioning, checkout, and troubleshooting.
Review and approve P&C related work of other team members.
Model transmission system impedances and perform short circuit fault studies.
Perform area protection studies and recommend settings for existing and new transmission line and station protection schemes.
Review, evaluate, and provide P&C comments and recommendations on transmission system planning proposals.
Coordinate with transmission customers and interconnected companies on associated protection issues.
Perform activities related to NERC P&C standards.
Identify, clarify, resolve, and initiate solutions to protection and control problems through the analysis of interruption reports and fault recorder records.
Contribute to the development of system-wide protection standards for transmission and distribution station protection, metering, and control applications.
Provide general P&C technical support, including technical interfaces with Telecom, Operations, Transmission Region Operations, Station Engineering, Transmission Planning, and Project Management.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electrical Computer, or Electrical Engineering Technology.
1-5 years of Electrical Engineering experience, preferably in Protection & Controls (P&C) or Facilities/Industrial settings.
Experience with CAPE or ASPEN software.
Knowledge of relay logic, switchgear, and substations.
Experience performing fault studies and coordination studies.
Understanding of power systems and relays.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Work Environment
The role is primarily office-based (97%), with occasional field visits (3%) to work on actual relays. You will interact with relay engineers, testing groups, telecom groups, and dispatch/control room engineers to troubleshoot problems. The position follows a standard Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM schedule, with a one-hour lunch break. The work environment promotes collaboration and growth within the team and organization.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $62.50
