Shrub Oak International School Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Full Time in Mohegan Lake, New York

Shrub Oak International School (www.shruboak.org) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. Compensation: $45/hour

Job Summary:

Reporting to the RN, the LPN is a year-round position, serving as an integral part of Shrub Oak’s comprehensive health and wellness program. The LPN employs an evidence-based, student-centric approach under the supervision of the RN to providing high-quality, proactive direct and indirect nursing, medical and overall proactive wellness care to our students. The LPN provides front line support for the daily operations of the Health & Wellness program both on and off campus, guiding and mentoring students, assisting with emergency response procedures, and collaborating with all members of the Shrub Oak staff. The LPN builds trusting relationships with students, families, the community and other medical service providers, while representing Shrub Oak International School in a respectful, competent manner. 

Position Type & Expected Hours of Work: Full Time; Monday thru Friday; 2:00pm-10:00pm

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Providers around holistic health of students and intersection of physical and psychiatric/emotional well being 

  • In collaboration with RN’s monitor health and wellness of the residents both as needed and on a routine basis 

  • Provide crisis response and first-aid for medical emergencies or student injuries, including collaboration with Emergency Medical Services as needed 

  • Support RN staff around providing medical case management

  • Collaborate with student guardian/ family members around medical needs and medical care 

  • Scheduling of needed appointments including bloodwork, medical, vision, dental, and others as needed. 

  • Routine monitoring of students’ height, weight, and vital signs. 

  • Administer students’ prescribed medications. 

  • Collaboration with the nutritionist and food service around dietary and health needs. 

  • Coordinate with medical providers and pharmacy around prescriptions and refills of student medications. 

  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team of providers including psychiatric, clinical, education, and direct-care providers. 

  • Works directly with students and through Direct Support Professionals to provide health education and support students in the development of healthy lifestyle habits. 

  • Performs any other responsibilities as needed and required under the direction of the RN.

Requirements:

Experience & Education

  • Licensed Practical Nurse in NYS, current and in good standing

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience as an LPN required; experience in pediatrics preferred 

  • Experience working with adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum or with developmental disabilities is strongly preferred 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve desired results working collaboratively in a dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders

  • Experience in program design, management, and implementation 

  • Ability to effectively and proactively interact with a wide variety of people in a manner that values diversity, and positively portrays Shrub Oak, its programs, personnel, and philosophies 

  • Demonstrated ability to remain sensitive and responsive to the diverse needs of the students, families, faculty, and staff, with a high degree of cultural competency and collegiality 

  • Outstanding and effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to accurately and consistently complete documentation and other administrative tasks in accordance with positional requirements

  • Ability to adapt, remain flexible and make sound and appropriate decisions under pressure where situations and circumstances are continually evolving 

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize

  • Proficiency in computer skills including the Microsoft 365 software, databases, electronic communication, and web-based applications 

  • Ability to collaborate beyond the confines of Health and Wellness including programming, education, professional development and outreach 

  • Skilled in mentoring students (adolescents and young adults) within area of responsibilities, all to empower his/her self-determination, self-advocacy and development

  • Ability to complete TCIS crisis intervention training and remain current on all required trainings 

Physical Requirements/Demands:

A workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; work regularly requires sustained concentration. Standing for sustained periods of time, bending, stretching, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice.

Work Environment:

We are a boarding school located on a 127-acre campus. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces, mostly inside the classroom or educational environment. May include work within the residential setting. The building has 6 floors accessible by staircases and elevators.
