What are we looking for?

Under the direction of the Director of Education, the Education Coordinator provides hands on, strategic leadership, assists to plan, implement, develop, and monitor the special education program. The Education Coordinator must work cross functionally, establishing and maintaining key relationships with all areas of the school. Having access to confidential information, discretion and independent judgement is required. A strong grasp of curriculum, development and implementations as well as the ability to mentor and foster growth in our educators and promote and enhance student engagement throughout the school day.

Essential Functions – Primary duties of the position

  • The Education Coordinator will provide overall responsibility for hiring, performance, development, documentation and talent management for assigned teachers and support staff.

  • Provide direct support, assistance, staff development and guidance to assigned teachers and support staff, in the improvement of instructional performance and curriculum. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Weekly supervision meeting with each assigned teacher targeting growth areas and fostering improvement

  • Weekly classroom observations to inform supervision meetings as well as to observe student levels of engagement to enhance student performance and promote student growth

  • Mentor through lesson plan writing and curriculum development process

  • Mentor through classroom management, including managing support staff

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of instructional methods as performed by assigned teaching staff via formal and informal observations

  • Proactively assists and makes recommendations to the Director of Education, in curriculum development, implementation, and revision based on observations of assigned teaching staff

  • Proactively handles communication with district inquiries, questions, concerns as needed in coordination with Director of Education

  • Developing and conducting staff wide professional development

  • Attends, leads, and supports ITEP meetings as assigned by the Director of Education

  • Coordinates and attends meetings within the various departments of the school wide staff

  • Works collaboratively with various members of the students’ educational team to ensure an effective program is being implemented

  • Coordinate, set up, support weekly family calls during the education day

  • Coordinate weekly Transdisciplinary meetings for student teams

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Master’s Degree in Education

  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience

  • NYS Special Education Certification

  • Ability to guide, develop and train teachers effectively in various techniques and strategies based upon adult learning theory and differentiation based upon the learning style of the staff member

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with all levels of staff throughout Shrub Oak, students, districts and constituents

  • Superior problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to think critically, handle multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Ability to assess students’ learning characteristics to assist in designing appropriate educational programs

  • Ability to facilitate direction to various staffing groups (education, support staff, Campus Life, etc.)

Salary range: $90,000 to $95,000 /yr. 

Must be able to think analytically, critically, assessing a variety of information to make complex judgements on strategic and tactical academic programming, proactively identifying students' situations, outcomes, responding appropriately to student situations, and directed staff regarding same.

The workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines etc. Work regularly requires sustained concentration.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a 12-month position. Full-time staff work a traditional 40-hour work week, with expected participation in extracurricular activities.   Ability to move quickly and freely around the campus, and on a moment’s notice, to ensure the safety of our students in unexpected or challenging situations. 

Valid driver’s license preferred.
