Salary Grade: NC06 / Salary Range: $33,272.00 - $58,226.00 - All recommended salaries are based on each applicant’s qualifying education and related experience in combination with the position’s budgeted salary. The maximum hiring rate for this position is $48,129.

This is an extended posting through January 31, 2025, for Vehicle/Repair Technician I (VERT I) positions in Division 13, Mitchell County. Multiple VERT I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our VERT I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a VERT I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.

Positions in this class perform semi-skilled small engine, automotive and heavy equipment repair. This is semi-skilled mechanic work. Work includes performance of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Work ranges from inspection and service to moderately complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software and conducting parts/systems failure analysis. Positions must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system and/or ancillary components/equipment. Positions in this class perform a variety of recurring and related tasks and repairs such as inspecting and replacing brake pads and shoes, replacing regulators, alternators and belts, and/or fitting or repairing standard aftermarket upgrades and equipment, preventative maintenance, tires and tubes, wheels & rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems and hydraulic systems. Employees may perform mechanic work at various levels. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in the repair and replacement of tires

  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment

  • Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench

    Additional Expectations:

    The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required.

NOTE: Selected candidate is required to furnish a complete set of tools.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
