This is a Public Notice for position being filled under the Direct Hiring Authority (DHA) for FireFighter (Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support), GS-0081-07.

Salary Range: $49,025 - $63,733 Work location: 5 CES - Minot AFB, ND

The primary purpose of this position is: To serve as a Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support) assigned to a crew engaged in structural firefighting and rescue operations. Drives and operates firefighting vehicles of significant complexity to respond to the presence or potential releases of Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT), for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release, and to conduct performance of noninvasive emergency medical procedures.

Duties:

  1. Performs hazard and risk assessment and conducts a complete incident analysis.
  2. Performs Basic Life Support.
  3. Drives and operates firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers and aerial ladder trucks.
  4. Performs structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multistoried buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities.
  5. Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.
  6. Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.

Recruitment Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  1. Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity; and of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc.
  2. Knowledge of basic and specialized structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy.
  3. Knowledge of HAZMAT emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions.
  4. Knowledge of basic life support techniques and protocols; and safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.
  5. Skill in operating communications equipment.
  6. Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; and to lift and carry heavy loads; and to conduct complete HAZMAT incident analysis; and to apply basic life support techniques and protocols.

Other significant facts pertaining to this position are:

  1. Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.
  2. Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
  3. The employee is required to work a 72 hour week which includes weekends and holidays. May be subject to recall.
  4. This is a Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random drug testing (in accordance with HQ-USAF letter dated 29 Jan 90).
