Position Overview: This position will provide technical support for the Zhenong Jin Research Lab in the Dept. of Bioproducts & Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota the University of Minnesota. The research of the Jin lab integrates ecology, computational modeling, remote sensing, and machine learning approaches to generate useful data that guides sustainable agricultural management, and to develop tools that can help farmers and regulators apply this science more effectively. Major Areas of Accountability : 80% The researcher will primarily focus on labeling land cover types (e.g., water body, residential area, cashew plantations, natural forest, cropland, shrubland) from high-resolution Google Earth maps collected in West Africa. The researcher is expected to accurately distinguish and label the land cover type from randomly selected locations in Google Earth, with a minimal speed of 80 random points per minute. The project may consist of a total of 20,000 random points. The researcher may be required to update labels iteratively based on the feedback from the subsequence imagery classification analysis performed by other lab members. 20% The Researcher will be expected to write technique reports to explain and document details on data collection and synthesis, and collaborate on research reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication when needed. Qualifications Required Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in computer science, environmental science, geography, or related field, and 2 years of related experience or a combination of education and work experience to equal six (6) years. * Working experience in GIS, QGIS or similar geospatial tools. * Experience with satellite image interpretations. * Strong oral communication and writing skills Preferred Qualifications: * Experience with python machine learning libraries such as Pytorch * Experience with deep learning algorithms for computer vision * Experience working in a university research lab setting * Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines How To Apply Applications must be submitted online.
