Essential Functions: 90 % Execution and logistical coordination of high complexity testing of cytokine/chemokine/mediator assays for clients, including: * Cytokine ELISA assays for M Health Fairview Hospital as well as samples arriving from other hospitals via Fairview's Outreach program. * ELISA analyses on body fluids such as blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. * Perform competency testing. * Provide accurate laboratory results in a timely manner. * Study relevant literature and manufacturers' product information to assist in execution of new assays. * Assess and validate new assays and new methodologies 10 % laboratory maintenance * Responsible for inventory of samples and reagents/kits. * Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment. Other: * Outstanding communication skills are required to enter comments on patient lab reports, communicate with other hospital lab personnel, and take calls from physicians. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree plus at least two years of experience, or a combination of education/experience totaling at least six years. The type of testing done by the lab is considered High Complexity testing. Therefore, testing personnel must have at minimum one of the following requirements documented in their personnel file before performing patient tests: * Medical Technologist degree * Bachelor of Science degree * Bachelor's degree that includes the following coursework: at least 6 semester credits in Chemistry plus at least 6 semester credits in Biology plus at least 12 more semester credits in any combination of sciences (chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology) About the Department Introduction to the facility: The Cytokine Reference Laboratory (CRL; 800 ft2 lab space), located in room 13-127 of the Phillips-Wangensteen Building, is a CLIA-88 licensed facility (#24D0931212) and has extensive experience in the analysis of cytokines, chemokines and growth factors from a variety of biological sources. The primary purpose of the work is to provide clinical cytokine analysis of blood and other biological fluids, as well as in tissue homogenates, which have been used as biomarkers to indicate immune and inflammatory status for many diseases. The CRL is the only clinical laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics. It also provides sample analysis for internal and external research projects. It functions as both a University of Minnesota ISO and ESO. By virtue of the CLIA certification, the work in this laboratory is categorized as "high complexity testing" (Center for Disease Control' s document 57 FR 7139, Feb. 28, 1992, as amended at 58 FR 5221, Jan. 19, 1993, Section 493.17 ) * Knowledge: Specialized scientific and technical knowledge is essential to perform pre-analytic, analytic or post-analytic phases of the testing. * Training and experience: (A) Specialized training is essential to perform the pre-analytic, analytic or post-analytic testing process; or (B) Substantial experience may be necessary for analytic test performance. * Reagents and materials preparation: (A) Reagents and materials may be labile and may require special handling to assure reliability; or (B) Reagents and materials preparation may include manual steps such as gravimetric or volumetric measurements. * Characteristics of operational steps: O erational steps in the testing process require close monitoring or control, and may require special specimen preparation, precise temperature control or timing of procedural steps, accurate pipetting, or extensive calculations. * Calibration, quality control, and proficiency testing materials:(A) Calibration materials, if available, may be labile;(B) Quality control materials may be labile, or not available; or(C) External proficiency testing materials, if available, may be labile. * Test system troubleshooting and equipment maintenance: (A) Troubleshooting is not automatic and requires decision-making and direct intervention to resolve most problems; or (B) Maintenance requires special knowledge, skills, and abilities. * Interpretation and judgment: (A) Extensive independent interpretation and judgment are required to perform the pre-analytic, analytic or post-analytic processes; and (B) Resolution of problems requires extensive interpretation and judgment.
