The funding is from the U.S. National Science Foundation's joint program with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), United Kingdom. Location of Workplace: University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Duration: Appointment is 1 year full-time and renewable for 2nd and 3rd years upon satisfactory progress. Position Description: The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be mentored by Dr. Brandy Toner (University of Minnesota) and will measure the physical and chemical properties of marine colloids and particles. The Post-Doc will have the following responsibilities: Job Duties: * Conduct original research on the interactions of iron and organic matter in the marine photic zone using synchrotron X-ray spectromicroscopy, advanced electron microscopy, and complementary analytical approaches (50%); * Participate in 4-5 oceanographic expeditions from Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BATS) (15%); * Participate in synchrotron instrument time (5%); * Prepare research findings for peer review publication (25%); * Communicate regularly with supervisors, mentors, and project collaborators (5%). Qualifications Required Qualifications: * Ph.D. in chemistry, oceanography, aqueous geochemistry, or a related discipline; * At least one prior experience in shipboard oceanographic field work or related experience; * Prior experience with analytical chemistry; * Demonstrated scientific publication record; * Demonstrated effective communication skills in a variety of settings (daily workplace interactions, project planning and outcomes, collaborative interactions, written reports, and presentations); * Ability to work with and maintain professional relationships with collaborators and co- workers. Preferred Qualifications: * Prior experience with trace metal clean sample collection and analytical procedures; * Prior experience with synchrotron X-ray microscopy or electron microscopy techniques; About the Department This position is in the Toner Lab in the Department of Soil, Water and Climate in CFANS on the St. Paul, MN campus of the University of Minnesota.
