This project is building an open-source, web-based resource in the form of a searchable, annotated HMong language corpus (database) to support linguistic research and the teaching and learning of the HMong language. The corpus will support efforts to describe and analyze the HMong language and provide valuable materials that language teachers and learners can utilize to improve education efforts. As a low-resource language lacking data for machine learning, the corpus will also provide valuable data that AI can use to build technology resources for HMong. This is an hourly, casual position and the responsibilities are: Transcribe and translate Hmong conversations into English Provide word for word and sentence translations in English Qualifications Required Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED equivalency Native speaker of Hmong, with knowledge of English Ability to write Hmong using RPA (Romanized Popular Alphabet) Preferred Qualifications: Research experience BA/BS or advanced degree About the Department Linguistics is the study of the human capacity for language. What properties of the human mind allow us to learn and use language in a way that is unique to us as a species? What can the similarities and differences found across human languages tell us about how language is stored and organized in our brains? What role does social context and other nonlinguistic factors play in how humans create meaning with language? Natural languages all involve a system of meaning (semantics), a system of externalization through speech or sign (phonology), and a grammatical system of sentence structure that links meaning and externalization (syntax). Students who major in Linguistics gain a strong background in the principles governing the structure of natural languages in all of these areas.
