Position Purpose

The Category Manager is a key leadership role within Sleep Number’s Strategic Sourcing organization. This role manages the overall strategic direction associated within the assigned commodities. It is responsible for proactively developing sourcing strategies that are aligned with business and program needs and then driving execution of those strategies while ensuring quality, delivery, and cost targets are exceeding expectations. This role will support the Sourcing Director or Vice President in actively managing and will be responsible for the commercial relationship with suppliers.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes sourcing strategies.

  • Develops and implements category strategies for various materials.

  • Ensures managed commodities and sub commodities have enough capacity to meet and exceed organizational demand.

  • Creates commodity roadmaps enabling the achievement of critical business targets.

  • Focuses on future internal requirements, supplier technology road maps, capabilities, capacities, and ultimately supplier selection.

  • Ensure a competitive sourcing environment leading to continuous improvement.

  • Documents source selection and ensures processes comply with internal procedures and guidelines.

  • Owns supplier relationships and drives internal category alignment.

  • Establish and manages supplier relationships and negotiates multi-year agreements with strategic partners.

  • Manages supplier compliance and performance to contract.

  • Lead negotiations with suppliers to ensure the best quality, service, and cost to achieve business objectives.

  • Support supplier initiatives including annual cost reductions, supplier consolidation, favorable business terms, etc.

  • Develops and implements a communication plan to gain internal support in driving the implementation of commodity strategies while serving as the point of contact for execution and supplier performance.

  • Demonstrates accountability and knowledge on market dynamics, benchmarks, legislation, and key drivers of assigned commodities.

  • Aligns with business initiatives and New Product Introductions

  • Work directly with internal partners to ensure New Product Introduction aligns with category strategies.

  • Partner with Product, R&D, Engineering, Materials Management and Operations in development and launch of new products to meet introduction timelines, cost and quality goals, and service level to customers.

  • Leverage existing technologies to support the sourcing process and identify additional technology needs to augment specific categories where applicable.

  • Consistently create, present, and implement process improvements within the organization.

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree. MBA preferred.

  • 6+ years of experience of direct materials sourcing experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with increased complexity in materials managed.

Working Conditions (if applicable):

  • Must be able to travel internationally & domestically.
