Wesleyan University Assistant Professor of Spanish in Middletown, Connecticut

The Spanish section in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek a colleague who specializes in modern Latin American literature and culture who can teach a wide variety of undergraduate courses on the Hispanophone world, including language classes at all levels. Although the primary scholarly focus is open, interest in Afro-diasporic literatures and cultures, and/or literatures and cultures that address migration, and/or exile in the region would be especially welcome. As an assistant professor of Spanish within the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, the successful candidate will be a core member of the Latin American Studies Program and will also have the opportunity to participate fully in the rich interdisciplinary culture of Wesleyan University, including the Center for the Humanities and the Center for Global Studies. The university offers excellent support for research and pedagogical innovation. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Spanish, Hispanic Literature, Latin American Literature, or a related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. in Spanish, Hispanic Literature, Latin American Literature, or a related field within one year of hire. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish.  Teaching load is two courses per semester. 

A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, 15-25 page writing sample in English or Spanish, and a teaching statement.   In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the university’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups. You will also be asked to provide three confidential letters of recommendation.
