Middlebury College Head Club Crew Coach in Middlebury, Vermont

The Head Club Crew Coach is responsible for leading and developing the club rowing program, fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and sportsmanship. This role oversees coaching, club athlete development, program operations, and community engagement while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $63,009 - $78,787 per year.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Mentor the Club’s membership as both competitive athletes and campus leaders, and the Club’s officers in organizational management and leadership. Foster an environment that encourages skill progression, teamwork, and personal growth for rowers at all levels, from novice to experienced athletes.

  • Develop and implement training plans, practice schedules, and race strategies to support athlete development and competitive success. Assist student club leaders with scheduling competitions and practices in accordance with College and league policies.

  • Report to Athletic Department leadership and partner across the department to leverage best practices in coaching, safety, compliance and student support.

  • Enforce safety protocols, maintain equipment standards, and ensure adherence to governing body regulations, including rowing association policies.

  • Collaborate with the Office of Sports Medicine to ensure all medical clearance requirements are adhered to without exception.

  • Manage equipment selection, procurement, maintenance and storage.

  • Supervise assistant coaches, ensuring alignment with the club’s coaching philosophy and objectives.

  • Coordinate budget planning, fundraising efforts with the Office of College Advancement, and securing necessary resources for team operations, including equipment and travel.

Requirements

  • 2 to 3 years of coaching experience is strongly preferred

  • US Rowing Level 2 coaching certification, or the ability to obtain it in the near future.

  • Must maintain appropriate certifications in CPR/AED/First Aid.

  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and if requested a college vehicle license. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain it in the near future.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of constituents through strong interpersonal skills, both written and oral.

  • Knowledge of and passion for rowing, with a desire to work in a club rowing program with student leadership.

  • Experience mentoring students in leadership and team-building.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Flexible schedule and available to work nights and weekends as needed. Rowing is a physically demanding activity, requiring lifting of heavy objects, work in extreme weather conditions, and in and around water.
