The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami is seeking a Senior Research Assoc 1 to serve as a Seagoing Research Technician for the Marine Biology and Ecology Department. The successful applicant will join the RSMAS TA/pH Team working on the US Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigation Program. The selected candidate will be responsible for leading the measurement of total alkalinity on GO-SHIP cruises.

General Description

Working under the direction of principal investigator, the seagoing research technician will support research activities related to the study of the seawater carbonate system in the oceans.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the measurement of total alkalinity (TA). Requires spending 1-3 months at sea per year. Post-cruise QA/QC cruise of TA data.

  • Examine the effect of ocean acidification and alkalinization on processes in the oceans.

  • Participation in lab and mesocosm experiments studying the effects of ocean acidification and alkalinization on corals

  • Participation in the writing of scientific papers on studies from cruises and in the laboratory.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Requires knowledge of seawater carbonate chemistry system

  • Ability to use and maintain spec pH instruments.

  • Knowledge of R or Matlab desirable.

    Education Requirement

    MS in marine chemistry or a related field and experience.

    Work Experience Requirements

  • At sea field experience highly desirable
