The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Neurological Surgery is currently seeking a full time Research Assistant 1 to work in Miami, FL. The Research Assistant contributes with research investigators by providing research and experimentation support while following established protocols. Further, the Research Assistant performs a clerical role to ensure the smooth operations of office facilities.

  • Sets up and operates various scientific apparatus and makes minor repairs.

  • Prepares correspondence and answers phones.

  • Formulates and maintains bibliographies and completes applications and forms.

  • Orders laboratory supplies and maintains culture media reagents.

  • Reviews and edits various materials for publication and prepares publication schedules.

  • Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

  • Dr. Shah’s laboratory investigates mechanisms of viral oncogenesis and novel viral-based therapeutics for cancer. A key component of the research is to advance our understanding of the cancer vir-ome, glioma immunology, and novel drug targets. The lab focuses on rapidly translating these discoveries to advance the treatment of malignant brain tumors.

  • The Research Assistant will assist the PI with purchasing cell-lines, preparing cell cultures, and run several experiments with varying time-frames.

  • The incumbent will also assist with documentation to submit to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to obtain approval for animal experiments.

  • The incumbent will be responsible for handling animals and assist in making preparations for animal surgeries.

  • The Research Assistant will be responsible for taking documentation, measurements, data entry, and simple analysis of experiments.

  • The incumbent will assist the PI in summarizing the data for presentations and papers.

Department Specific Qualifications

Education:High School, Bachelor’s degree is preferred

Experience:Minimum of 1 year of experience or equivalent educational experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Interest in the medical field is strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and on a team.

  • Ability to handle animals (eg. mice) and to sacrifice the animal according to IACUC procedures.

  • Willing to work long hours or on weekends for certain experiments.

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

  • Commitment to the University’s core values.

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
