Associate Professor / Assistant Professor of Clinical - Surgery, Kidney/Pancreas Transplant (MTI)

The position of Associate Professor/ Assistant professor of Surgery requires an M.D. degree and must be Board Certified or Board Eligible or foreign equivalent. This individual must also have completed a Transplant Fellowship. He or She must possess a Florida Medical License and a DEA certificate. This individual will be directly responsible to the Director of Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant, DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery.

This individual will be responsible for the clinical care in all aspects of pediatric and adult Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas transplant surgery including pre-transplant evaluation and post-transplant care.

He or she will be involved in resident supervision at the University of Miami/ Jackson memorial Medical Center. In addition, this position may require teaching of students in both junior and senior elective programs as sponsored by this Division within the student’s surgical experience. Attendance and supervision at the outpatient clinic may be required.

This individual will also be responsible for pursuing research protocols to fund experiments under his/her supervision.

The successful candidate will be committed to mission of the Miller School of Medicine and the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery. He or she will demonstrate a caring attitude and be able to fulfill service responsibilities in the most cost effective, customer friendly matter. This individual must possess personal and professional integrity and the highest ethical standards that can be a model for faculty, staff and students.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Administration:

  • Assist with all relevant federal and state statutes, regulations, and administrative instructions, standards of care and the accrediting standards of CMS, UNOS and all other regulatory agencies.

  • Ensure that HIPAA policies are implemented and followed by all clinical, administrative and research staff of this unit.

  • Maintain an effective working relationship with the medical staff, transplant service staff, administration for this program.

  • Help develop along with the Medical and Surgical Director of Transplant the inpatient infrastructure required for the hospital care of Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant – develop inpatient service line.

  • Help develop along with the Surgical Director of Transplant Services the OR infrastructure required for the efficient surgical care of our patients.

Program Initiatives:

  • Maintain a good outpatient clinical program for Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant.

  • Collaborate with the Medical and Surgical Director to establish transplant program goals and objectives consistent with those of the hospital and of the MTI.

  • Collaborate with all multidisciplinary service lines to help in the care of these patients both pre and post-transplant; including co-chairing weekly Multidisciplinary Pre-Transplant Selection Committee meetings where candidacy of new kidney and kidney/pancreas transplant referrals are reviewed and accepted or declined for listing.

  • Participate in site review by regulatory agencies and insurance companies.

  • Promotes research activity within his/her specialty for themselves and other physicians within the MI, thus enhancing both clinical and academic endeavors/pursuits.

  • Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationship with colleagues, referral MDs, hospital personnel, and patients/families in order to achieve maximum operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction.

  • Demonstrate consistent, efficient, cost effective and quality transplant care at all times.

  • Participate in transplant patient/family satisfaction projects.

Quality

  • Provide physician leadership to the Transplant program’s Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement Committee

  • Participate in Monthly Program-specific QAPI committee meetings.

  • Attend MTI QAPI Committee meetings.

  • Analyze outcomes and trends in data analysis to determine appropriate performance metrics.

  • Assist in data collection, analysis, trending and interpretation of data.

  • Identify and provide physician leadership to performance improvement activities.

  • Participate in the development and revision of treatment guidelines, policies and protocols.

  • Report quality of care issues promptly to the appropriate individuals, committees and hospital administration.

  • Identify and report deficiencies in transplant care policies, guidelines and protocols.

  • Consult with appropriate medical staff and administration regarding quality care issues and adverse outcomes; identify areas to improve patient care.

  • Assure that continuum of care is maintained.

Clinical Education:

  • Ensures education is provided for hospital staff regarding transplant program policies and appropriate medical practices.

Business Development/Community Outreach:

  • Maintain relations with referring physicians and community organizations whose activities relate to these transplants.

  • Participate in and support business development activities to increase physician patient referrals.

  • Serve as a resource for referring physicians and provide timely response and feedback.

  • Oversees and participates in fundraising activities in support of transplant needs.

  • Participate in hospital, physician and community outreach activities as may be requested by administration.

  • Participate in transplant community and physician education.
